Two men from Sunderland have landed fines and costs of over £1,250 for using an unlicenced gill net in the River Wear.
They only caught one sea trout on this occasion but the net could have been deadly to any wildlife entangled in it.

Anglers cannot fish for species such as carp, bream, perch, roach, tench, pike and chub, on rivers, streams, drains, and some canals and stillwaters.
Where fishing is permitted, you still need a rod licence.
