DC Police Chief Peter Newsham tells DC City Council homicides are being driven by an increase in petty disputes, robberies, retaliation and domestic violence. Since 2016 an average of 500 people a year are shot in the city. 80% of murders are result of gunshot wounds.
Later this morning Daron Wint will be sentenced for the most vicious crime I have covered in my 38 years in this city. I was at the scene in 2015 and I was in the courtroom when he was convicted late last year. Prosecutors are asking for life without release.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. Travis was a beloved @AnacostiaHigh alumni. His death will be extremely difficult for an already devastated community. @MayorBowser has the power to save lives by fully implementing the NEAR Act and chooses not to. DC deserves better.
Death everywhere in this city, and a Mayor who thinks the answer is sending militarized cops into the neighborhoods suffering the worst of it already, knowing full well that more police hasn't given us safer streets or homes.
@alanhenney They frequently protest House/Senate buildings and the DHHS building. Ive heard they blocked the entrance quite a few times with a wheelchair chain.
