The Council Led Affordable Purchase scheme is just one of multiple ways that Fianna Fail in government has changed housing policy. For a decade in opposition we objected to the affordable purchase scheme being scraped and reinstating it was one of the first things we did upon entering government in 2020.

The Fianna Fail Presidental speech is the formal conclusion of our Ard Fheis and is always attended by the full Diplomatic Corp. The idea being that they hear our party position and report it back to their own national government. I believe Ireland has had a strong and leading response against the killing of civilians in this conflict and has been one of the principal defenders of the UN position and call for a ceasefire. 
Our position was again reiterated last night by Micheal Martin and that message will be communicated to governments around the world because of the presence of the Diplomatic Corp. I have no doubt that it was uncomfortable for the Isreali ambassador to sit with other diplomats including the Palestinian Ambassador to hear our Party President's comments and also to sit through the sustained round of applause which followed it by our members. The severing of all diplomatic ties is always an option in any dispute but you have to weigh up who would really suffer. I've no doubt the isreali government would expel our ambassador but the reality is Irish citizens are currently in Israel and Palestine, Irish peace keepers are currently in the region. We must keep a diplomatic line open to protect these people. If an Irish citizen was injured or killed tomorrow, we must have the means to negotiate their exit. Equally any Irish citizen in Israel or Palestine may need to access refuge, protection and safety in our offices in Tel Aviv and Ramallah. Closing diplomatic relations would close this lifeline to our own citizens. "The unfolding tragedy and the rising toll of lost lives and especially of children has to stop. We urgently need a humanitarian ceasefire. We need all hostages to be released. And we need a significant scaling up of vital supplies for civilians and especially medical supplies.  This terrible conflict is achieving nothing but death and misery. It needs to stop."
