The grass at this year's World Cup has traveled farther than some of the fans.
Half of this year's tournament stadiums were built with artificial turf for football, so FIFA had to bring in natural grass to transform them into soccer pitches. That meant growing custom hybrid grass on farms, trucking it hundreds of miles across multiple states, and maintaining it—sometimes under stadium roofs with artificial lights.
TIME senior sports correspondent Sean Gregory went behind the scenes at Los Angeles Stadium, to see what it takes to prepare one of the world's most important playing surfaces.
We just met Jeff and Matt Hardy at #TNASlammiversary. This is insane. They were a huge part of our childhood. 15-year-old me would never have believed this. It was so cool getting to chat with them and share some of our wrestling memories.
@MATTHARDYBRAND@JEFFHARDYBRAND are LEGENDS! My fav tag team growing up! I know they will take good care of @FreddyLA7 he’s been doing wonders for our country and showing us the wonderful people & places of our great nation that many of us might not have seen before 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I’m so happy you’re enjoying your time in America, @FreddyLA7! Gonna make sure @ThisIsTNA has you all set up for #TNASlammiversary tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting you.
A special message from @Cristiano's mother Maria Dolores: Pride at her son's record-breaking @fifaworldcup achievements, and a thank you to fans for supporting Cristiano and for uniting around the FIFA World Cup. 🙌🇵🇹
As a kid, you dream of scoring in a World Cup.
That dream finally became a reality❤️
The result wasn’t what we wanted, but we’re through as group winners and moving full steam ahead into the knockout rounds.
Thank you to everyone for the incredible support. We feel it every step of the way.
Time to reset, recover, and get ready for the next challenge.
On to the knockout rounds 🇺🇸🌎
"Let me put it in domestic football terms: We clinched a playoff spot, it's week 17, we played backups, and lost on a field goal on the last play of the game."
@colincowherd is not concerned after the USA's 3-2 loss to Türkiye
German fans join Dutch fans in “Left, Right.”
“Don’t come to America,” they said.
“You’ll hate it, Trump’s a fascist,” they said.
“Nobody will go,” they said.
Ladies and gentlemen, World Cup 2026 courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue!” 🇺🇸🔥🇩🇪🇳🇱
A German fan said it best:
“If you want to hate America, watch the news. If you want to love America, drive through it.”
Over 3.6 million fans packed stadiums for the World Cup, breaking attendance records. Millions came from every corner of the globe and experienced what the headlines never show: welcoming people, incredible hospitality, and a country unlike any other.
The media sells outrage. America sells itself.
In Canada, a bear terrified an entire neighborhood after wandering into a home's backyard
The neighbors locked themselves inside, but the fierce predator was chased away by someone even more dangerous — a cat.

I don’t care what you think about Gregg’s tenure as USMNT head coach.
To watch your son score a World Cup goal for his country after having coached that very same team is incredible, heartwarming stuff. 🇺🇸
Just another reason the World Cup is the absolute best.

I’ve wanted 2 wins & many goals in the group stage since forever, so far they’ve given us plenty to celebrate during this first phase. We hadn’t done this before & never had the luxury to field a totally different XI in the 3rd game. Let’s enjoy and push our boys for more🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
From @TheAthletic: The U.S. men's team is enlisting dogs to help athletes facing high-pressure moments during the World Cup. The inclusion of dogs in the workplace is part of an expanding trend across soccer teams. https://t.co/L1UvXf1nNm
