DC Public Restrooms

Our goal is to persuade the DC government to finance and install clean, safe public restrooms available to everyone in needed areas of our Nation’s Capital

[DC Public Restrooms @DCrestrooms]

I was honored to be interviewed by City Cast DC on public restrooms in DC. Key messages: (1) access to clean safe public restrooms is critical for personal & public health; (2) DC's businesses & economy benefit; (3) the Mayor's leadership is critical.

DC has six Thrones (@ThroneLabs ) with 4 more to be added with FY 2026 funding from three Council Committee chairs who want Thrones in their Wards.

AND, when Mayor Bowser decided to stop the program, 645 DC users raised their voices and made her change her mind.

To our good fortune, buy in from @BrianneKNadeau who, based on our research and advocacy, introduced a bill that became law.

When the going got tough, due in large part to resistance from Mayor Bowser @BrianneKNadeau found a way to make it happen.

[DC Public Restrooms @DCrestrooms]

We began by doing applied research to document the need, followed by over 70 presentations to a variety of groups, over 70 testimonies at DC Council oversight and budget hearings, accumulating along the way numerous newspaper articles documenting the need.

DC HAS CLEAN, SAFE STANDALONE PUBLIC RESTROOMS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY ARE HERE TO STAY.

It only took TEN YEARS with THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF ADVOCACY.

In late 2014, a group of DC residents committed to ensuring that DC has clean, safe public restrooms in needed areas.

Delighted that DC Council Committee on Public Works is recommending an expansion of the successful Throne standalone public restroom pilot from 6 to 10 in the DC FY 2026 budget & adding a position at DPW responsible for overseeing the Thrones. Kudos to @BrianneKNadeau

As a retired USAID Foreign Service Officer who spent her career helping the poor in Central America and Africa I can't help but wonder how Trump, Musk, & Rubio can sleep at night knowing they are responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths around the world.

[DC Public Restrooms @DCrestrooms]

Today (March 10, 2025) Mr. Rubio pounded the last nail into the coffin of an initiative launched by Mr. Trump on January 20 and carried out zealously by Mr. Musk who, with little knowledge of USAID, calls it a “criminal organization”.

Thousands of US farmers who send their excess grain to needy countries no longer have outlets for their products.

Trust in the US, has been destroyed. "Trust is not something that is built up quickly --it can be lost overnight and it will take generations to rebuild".

Wonderful gathering Sunday with @BrianneKNadeau, @DCPublicRestrooms and @ThroneLabs members to celebrate long awaited Public Restroom Pilot with 6 Thrones installed in various areas of DC. Consistently positive user reviews from since their April - June installation.

Your bladder deserves the royal treatment. Try a Throne. #HeardInLA

Couldn’t agree more public bathrooms are “vital” for many many reasons.

[Throne Bathrooms @ThroneBathrooms]

Why are public bathrooms treated as “optional” when they should be treated as utterly vital?
