The Beauty of Episode 3 of Lanterns is the nuance.
Everyone is wrong: John, Johnâs Parents, The Guardians, Hal.
Told from John's POV, we see how he was raised in an abusive household with the show framing that abuse from the POV of the victim.
Johnâs parents use fear of racial prejudice as a tool to abuse their son into becoming a green lantern. Racism is real and affects so many people. However, the ring is explicitly portrayed as having chosen John's father before Hal.
The show tells us in that opening scene why the ring chose Hal and why Hal is fearless: he watched his father explode in front of him as a child in a plane and Hal overcame that fear and became a pilot just like him. Hal is equally as fucked up by trauma.
What we also see in that scene is the Stewarts' refusal to acknowledge Halâs humanity or identity because they wonât let John watch his interview.
This show is looking to exam race, racism, and racial prejudice from multiple angles all while honoring the main themes of legacy and fear.
There is so much going on in this episode and it asks a deep level of critical thinking from its audience. I canât wait for John and Hal to eventually trauma bond and gain respect for each other.
