Former Bath Iron Works President William “Bill” Haggett, who led the shipyard from 1981 to 1992, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

Haggett grew up in Bath and graduated from Morse High School. His father worked as a lead man in the tin shop for 42 years and he had uncles and grandfathers that worked at the shipyard in the 1940s and 1950s. His son is an assistant foreman in ship’s completion.

After studying history, government and economics at Colby College, Haggett joined BIW in 1963 in the Purchasing Department. He worked in contracts, public relations, marketing, operations and was named to succeed John Sullivan Jr. as the company’s ninth president in 1981.

Haggett led BIW through some of its most significant program changes, including the successful competition to become the follow yard in producing Ticonderoga-class cruisers and the critical competition to become the lead yard for the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, the DDG 51s that have become the longest running Navy shipbuilding program.

Known for this devotion to the City of Bath and his charitable work outside the shipyard, Haggett became a major force in the Bath Area Family YMCA, leading multiple capital campaigns for the social service organization and helping cultivate the relationship between the Y and BIW on launching a new childcare center.

Current BIW President Chuck Krugh said he enjoyed the time he spent with Haggett. “He was full of energy, a strong supporter of BIW and ever-present in the community,” Krugh said. “He will be missed.”

Haggett was 90. The shipyard will be flying the BIW flag at half-mast this week in recognition of Haggett’s significant contributions to our business.
