Remembering Darkest Chapter of Indian Democracy!

The Emergency marked one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history. Fundamental rights were frozen, general elections were cancelled, the judiciary was silenced, and over one lakh dissenters, journalists, and political leaders were imprisoned without trial.

For 21 months, the world’s largest democracy witnessed authoritarian rule. Forced mass sterilisations, slum demolitions, police excesses, and censorship inflicted immense suffering on ordinary citizens, while dissent was treated as a crime and the power of the state went unchecked.

As we observe #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas, let us remember these historical truths and honour those who stood up to defend democracy and constitutional values.

Today is the death anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a visionary leader who dedicated his life to the nation and placed national interest above all else. The Bharatiya Janata Party continues to uphold this ideal through its guiding motto: "Nation First, Party Next, Self Last."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embodied this principle throughout his public life, consistently urging party workers to do the same. This commitment is clearly reflected in an incident that highlights how these values are translated into governance.

Former Mathura Mayor Dr. Mukesh Aryabandhu recalls an interaction with PM Modi after the 2017 Uttar Pradesh local body elections. Newly elected mayors had gathered to meet the Prime Minister, who shared a powerful message: never allow power, personal relationships, or political affiliations to come in the way of your duty towards the people.
To illustrate this point, he narrated an incident from his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat.

During a major road-widening project in Ahmedabad, a portion of the BJP's own office building stood in the way of the proposed expansion. Officials hesitated, assuming the ruling party's office would receive special treatment, while some even expected the project alignment to be altered.

When the matter reached Narendra Modi, his response was unequivocal: "If the houses and properties of ordinary citizens are being acquired for a project that serves the public, why should the BJP office be treated differently?"

The instruction was clear: the wall would go, and the road would stay.

The road was widened. Public interest prevailed.

For PM Modi, it was a pure matter of principle, placing the nation and its people above party and self. It is this same spirit that Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and the founding leaders of the party stood for.

Tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who lived and ultimately sacrificed his life for the country, without ever compromising on the principle of Nation First.

VIDEO | Nagpur: Ramesh Khune, Inspector, Sakkardara Police Station, says, “On the 20th June at around 2:00 AM, an incident occurred at a madrasa called Darul Uloom Taj in the Tajbagh area near Kartarpur station. Ten children were staying there for religious studies. A man named Moula, who was a friend of one of the teachers and was originally from Bihar, used to visit the madrasa from time to time. On that particular night, he came to the madrasa. It is alleged that he attempted to engage in inappropriate conduct with a child who was asleep. The child woke up immediately and raised an alarm. The following morning, the child informed the teacher about the incident. The teacher questioned the accused and removed him from the premises. There were a total of 10 boys. We rescued them and placed them in a child shelter. The children were from different states, with most of them belonging to Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. As soon as the police received information about the incident, they coordinated with officers from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and registered a case against the accused. The accused is currently absconding, but we expect to locate him soon. Our team is actively searching for him.”
