@realazadeh @geraldposner I supported Nikki Haley over Trump during the primaries. However, my question for her is: How exactly does she propose to “finish what was started”? Regardless, we can agree on one thing—it is not finished yet.

اگر تاریخ راه دیگری را انتخاب می‌کرد؛ نگاهی به مجموعه‌های تلویزیونی «برای تمام بشریت» و «شهر ستاره»

-گاهی برای فهمیدن اینکه چه نیرویی مسیر تاریخ را ساخته، باید تصور کرد اگر یکی از آن نیروها تغییر می‌کرد، چه چیزهایی فرو می‌ریخت و چه چیزهایی از نو ساخته می‌شد. از همین‌جاست که «برای تمام بشریت» (For All Mankind) اهمیت پیدا می‌کند؛ مجموعه‌ای که از سال ۲۰۱۹ در پلتفرم Apple TV+ منتشر شد و ایده‌ای ساده اما پرقدرت را به مرکز روایت خود آورد.

- آیا پیشرفت علمی نتیجه طبیعی گذر زمان است، یا محصول رقابت، انگیزه و اراده سیاسی؟ ما عادت کرده‌ایم فناوری را با تقویم بسنجیم؛ انگار کافی است چند دهه بگذرد تا جهان خودبخود پیشرفته‌تر شود. اما تاریخ چنین ساده نیست. بسیاری از جهش‌های بزرگ بشر در دوره‌هایی رخ داده‌اند که رقابت سیاسی، نظامی یا اقتصادی به اوج رسیده است.

- شاید ارزش اصلی «برای تمام بشریت» و «شهر ستاره» همین باشد. آنها نه آینده را پیش‌بینی می‌کنند و نه گذشته را صرفاً بازنویسی. آنها ما را وادار می‌کنند تاریخ را نه به‌عنوان سرنوشتی قطعی، بلکه به‌عنوان یکی از مسیرهای ممکن ببینیم؛ مسیری که می‌توانست با تغییری کوچک، به جهانی کاملاً متفاوت برسد.

- در تابستان ۱۹۶۹، نخستین ردپا بر ماه متعلق به آمریکا بود و تاریخ همان راهی را رفت که امروز می‌شناسیم. اما کافی است فقط برای لحظه‌ای تصور کنیم آن ردپا متعلق به فضانوردی شوروی بود. شاید هرگز ندانیم جهان واقعاً چه شکلی پیدا می‌کرد. اما همین پرسش کافی است تا بفهمیم تاریخ، بیش از آنکه مجموعه‌ای از سرنوشت‌های از پیش نوشته‌شده باشد، میدان امکان‌هایی است که تنها یکی از آنها به واقعیت تبدیل شده است.

How smart are we?

When I co-led Stop Child Executions @sce_now organization with @DEtebari , one of the bravest lawyers we stood with was @NasrinSotoudeh.

She did not just defend human rights, she paid for them with her freedom.

Late nights, constant pressure, years taken from her life. Arrested again and again for doing what most would be too afraid to do, defending women, children, and political prisoners in Iran.

We fought for her release alongside @AmnestyIran, @pen_int, @FrontLineHRD, @ICHRCanada
and many other human rights organizations.
In 2018 when she was arrested, around Nowruz, we ran a campaign asking people to place her photo on their Haft Seen tables and pressure governments to help.

This year, just a week after Nowruz; she was arrested again.

And once again, we cannot look away.

In 2019, I had the honor of accepting an award on her behalf at a @PENCanada event, with @MargaretAtwood. Sadly Iranian women are still resisting a system that echoes The Handmaid’s Tale, but this is not fiction. This is happening now.

And do not forget her husband, @RezaKhandan4, imprisoned for standing beside her and making buttons against forced hijab.

Even in times of war, the Iranian regime continues to turn inward, cracking down on its own people, escalating arrests, and carrying out executions.

While so many political prisoners are at risk, we mustn’t forget those who have been fighting the system for decades and have paved the way for freedom with great danger.
