A week ago, we were at the 19th Kenya Internet Governance Forum #KeIGF convened by @KICTANet in Nairobi. Preceding the main forum was the Kenya Youth IGF, held on 20th May, which brought together youth from across East African region to deliberate on #techpolicy issues.
The convening highlighted a generation actively engaged in shaping digital governance conversations through such convenings both nationally and globally and through active participation in consultations on legislative frameworks.

#KeIGF noted the strides various stakeholders made in bridging the digital divide. However, critical concerns around emerging technology laws and policies were also raised, especially whether these frameworks are designed to protect citizens or risk suppressing civic space and limiting access to evolving digital opportunities. Concerns about #surveillance, #datasovereignty, #dataprotection, internet shutdowns, punitive legislation, and #digitalexclusion were also highlighted.

Calls were made for stronger coordination, more meaningful inclusion, and sustained investment in youth capacity within internet governance spaces.

📢📢The Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa 2026 is heading to #Mauritius 🇲🇺!📢📢

We are excited to announce that #FIFAfrica26 will take place in Mauritius from September 28 to October 1, 2026.

As the 13th edition of Africa’s key platform for digital rights, tech policy trends, and governance conversations, #FIFAfrica26 will bring together diverse voices to shape the future of Africa’s digital landscape.

The Forum continues its legacy of bringing together policymakers, journalists, academics, regulators, human rights defenders, platform operators, telecom actors, and many more.

Over 500 participants will convene at #FIFAfrica26 to engage the most pressing internet freedom issues shaping Africa today. It is where Africa’s digital future is debated, shaped, and strengthened.

Key themes at #FIFAfrica26 will include:

PS, Dr. @azawedde signs an MoU with United Nations Health Industry Foundation (UNHIF) Hangzhou, China with Prince Kimbugwe Foundation as the local partner.
The purpose of this MoU is to promote cooperation in AI technology transfer, digital innovation, youth capacity building, smart agriculture, and international exchange programmes in support of Uganda's ICT development priorities.

Today, @MoICT_Ug, in collaboration with @STIsecretariat, convened a high-level strategic workshop to strengthen coordination across Uganda’s innovation ecosystem.

The workshop brought together leadership and technical teams to map existing areas of collaboration, identify gaps, and co-develop a shared, forward-looking framework that integrates ICT and Science, Technology & Innovation initiatives in line with national priorities.

Emphasizing the central role of digital skills in national development, Dr. @azawedde, Permanent Secretary at @MoICT_Ug, noted, “Digital skills are not a welfare programme , they are a value creation engine for jobs, businesses, and national growth.”

Reinforcing this direction, Dr. @DrMusenero highlighted the country’s strategic shift, stating, “We are moving from consumption to production — building the capacity to create and retain value here in Uganda.”

A key outcome of the engagement is the finalization of preparations for the soft launch of the IoT Lab—an important milestone reflecting the convergence of both institutions’ mandates in advancing technology development, deployment, and innovation.
