I asked them to lay their lives and their property at the disposal of the Mussalmans for the protection of their holy places.

Even today I am asking them to practise ahimsa, to settle quarrels by dying but not by killing.

And what do I find to be the result?

How many temples have been desecrated?

How many sisters come to me with complaints? …

Hindu women are in mortal terror of Mussalman goondas…

How can I now ask the Hindus to put up with everything patiently?”

It came after the collapse of the Khilafat-Non-Cooperation alliance, the 1921 Moplah rebellion and violence against Hindus in Malabar, and a succession of Hindu-Muslim communal clashes during 1922-24. The immediate background was the Kohat violence of 9-11 September 1924, after which virtually the entire Hindu population of Kohat had to be evacuated.
