Double Standard of Karnataka towards its own minority language - Tulu

The Karnataka government’s neglectful attitude toward its own language, Tulu, remains a glaring example of linguistic discrimination. Despite officially permitting Tulu to be taught as an optional third language across the Tulunad region in 2010, the government has failed to provide the necessary support to sustain this initiative. No dedicated Tulu teachers have been recruited to date. Instead, it is the passion and dedication of existing teachers that have kept the language alive in schools. These teachers, without any additional remuneration, have taken it upon themselves to teach Tulu alongside their primary subjects.

In stark contrast, the government actively supports third-language education in Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, and several other languages, including the recruitment of full-time teachers for these subjects. Such partiality is a disservice to Tulu, which holds significant cultural and historical importance within Karnataka.

The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, which once provided a modest honorary salary of ₹3,000 per month to Tulu teachers, has ceased this support due to inadequate government funding. As a result, many schools have discontinued Tulu instruction altogether.

To compound the issue, certain activists and government officials are now advocating for a two-language policy that prioritizes Kannada and English, effectively sidelining Tulu in the education system. This stance further alienates a language that has deep roots in Karnataka’s Tulunad region.

Despite the region being an integral part of Karnataka, the government has consistently failed to take meaningful steps to preserve and promote Tulu. This neglect not only undermines the linguistic heritage of the state but also alienates the Tulu-speaking community, who continue to fight for their language’s rightful place in Karnataka’s educational and cultural landscape.

Stop the #Yettinahole project.
It has already caused enough ecological damage in the region. The Western Ghats and its biodiversity have been severely neglected by successive Karnataka governments. This has just been a money-minting project with no results. If it is not stopped, one day we may see a catastrophe.
