Spare me the sudden rules clinic from people who couldn’t name a clock-stoppage rule if it bit them.

Michigan got one more play. The conference reviewed it, put the second back, and Bryce Underwood hit JJ Buchanan. That’s the game. You don’t have to like it. You do have to live with it.

What’s hilarious is the people screaming loudest. Ohio State fans. Michigan State fans. The same two fanbases that treat every last-second gift they ever got like divine justice and every one Michigan gets like a federal crime.

Spartan fans: sit down. 2001. East Lansing. “Spartan Bob.” Your home clock operator froze one second so Jeff Smoker could spike it and throw a touchdown as time expired. Michigan radio called it criminal on the air. You still wear that win. You still talk about Trouble with the Snap like it was scripture. Don’t lecture anybody about phantom seconds when your program’s most famous win was built on one.

Buckeye fans: even worse. You won a national championship off the most famous gift flag in modern college football. 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Pass interference in overtime that half the country still thinks was a joke. Then 2016. The Spot. J.T. Barrett on fourth-and-1, Michigan still swears he was short, you got the first down and the touchdown and you danced on it for a decade. You also scored with one second left at Notre Dame and called it destiny. Now one second goes against a MAC team in Ann Arbor and suddenly you’re constitutional scholars.

If your entire identity is “the refs love Michigan,” you don’t know college football. You know highlight-reel grievance. Every program in this sport has eaten a clock call, a spot, a flag, a replay they hated. The difference is some of you only recognize it when it happens to the team you already despise.

Michigan still had to throw it. Buchanan still had to catch it in a pile. That’s a play, not a conspiracy. If that wrecks your weekend, you weren’t watching the sport. You were waiting for an excuse.

It’s great to be a fan. It’s embarrassing to act like the universe owes your team every close call and Michigan none of them.
