Assam’s Capital Expenditure Surges 13- Fold, Driving Infrastructure and Long Term Growth..
Assam Chief Minister Dr. @himantabiswa has stated that the state's capital expenditure has increased more than 13 fold over the past decade from around ₹2,000 crore to nearly ₹26,000 crore, reflecting a sustained focus on building infrastructure and accelerating economic growth.
The Hon'ble Chief Minister said every rupee invested in capital expenditure has helped create critical public assets, including schools, hospitals, roads and bridges, laying the foundation for a stronger and more prosperous Assam.
Describing capital expenditure as the backbone of sustainable development, Hon'ble CM mentioned that investments in quality infrastructure not only improve public services but also enhance productivity, attract private investment and generate long term employment opportunities.
The significant increase in public investment has played a key role in improving connectivity, strengthening healthcare and education infrastructure, and supporting industrial and economic development across the state.
Reaffirming our government's commitment to responsible fiscal management, theHon'ble Chief Minister stated that growth oriented public spending remains central to our vision of Viksit Assam, ensuring that development reaches every section of society.
In line with this approach, our government has begun preparations for the 2026–27 State Budget. It is to inform that, acting swiftly on the Hornbill hunting incident that surfaced on social media, our Forest Department has arrested three accused persons under the Margherita East Range of Digboi Forest Division.
Wildlife crimes will not be tolerated at any cost.

I was recently asked by members of the media about the status of the Golden Langurs rescued from an illegal wildlife trafficking network.
I am happy to inform that the 7 Golden Langurs, whose trafficking had made headlines, have now been successfully released back into the wild at Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park after rescue, rehabilitation and careful scientific monitoring.
Their return to their natural habitat is a testament to the dedicated efforts of our police, forest officials, wildlife experts, enforcement agencies and local communities.
This also sends a strong message to wildlife criminals: Assam has zero tolerance for poaching and wildlife trafficking.
Together, we remain committed to protecting Assam's rich biodiversity and safeguarding our natural heritage for future generations.
@chirangpolice & @btcforest did a great job !

A beautiful sight of the Deo Haah (White-winged Wood Duck), Assam's State Bird and one of the world's rarest ducks, in its natural habitat at Nameri Tiger Reserve.
Through habitat restoration and scientific conservation efforts under APFBC Phase-II, Nameri has emerged as a vital refuge for this critically endangered species, paving the way for a state wide conservation strategy in Assam.

Assam’s Cultural Heritage Shines Brighter as Four More Traditional Products Receive GI Tags..
Assam’s rich cultural legacy has received a major boost with four more traditional products earning Geographical Indication (GI) status, strengthening the identity of the state’s indigenous crafts and opening new opportunities for rural artisans and weavers.
The newly GI-certified products are Karbi Anglong Handloom Products, Assam Bihu Pepa, Assam Bamboo Crafts and Deuri Handloom Products. The recognition by the Geographical Indications Registry of the Government of India marks an important milestone in preserving Assam’s unique traditions while enhancing their visibility in national and global markets.
The achievement was facilitated by NABARD Assam, which has been actively supporting the registration of unique products from the state. With these additions, the number of GI-certified products supported by NABARD in Assam has risen to 12, reflecting the state's growing success in safeguarding its traditional knowledge and craftsmanship.
Each of the newly recognised products represents a distinct aspect of Assam’s cultural identity. The Bihu Pepa, one of the most recognisable symbols of Assam’s iconic Bihu festival, joins traditional handloom and bamboo craft products that have been nurtured by generations of skilled artisans and tribal communities.
The GI tag provides legal protection against imitation and misuse while helping producers secure better market access, premium pricing and stronger brand recognition. The recognition is expected to benefit thousands of artisans, weavers and craftsmen across Assam by creating new livelihood opportunities and encouraging the continuation of traditional skills.
The latest recognition further strengthens Assam’s position as a hub of traditional craftsmanship and cultural excellence. It also demonstrates how heritage preservation can go hand in hand with economic growth and community empowerment.
From the vibrant sounds of the Bihu Pepa to the artistry of handloom and bamboo crafts, Assam’s timeless traditions are now gaining the recognition they deserve on a larger stage, ensuring that heritage continues to create opportunities for future generations.

Assam Researcher Uncovers Hidden Scientific Potential of Traditional Thekera Fruit..
A fruit that has been a part of Assamese kitchens for generations is now gaining recognition in the scientific world, thanks to the dedicated research of retired Indian Forest Service officer and botanist Jatindra Sarma.
Known locally as thekera or thoikora, the fruit belongs to the Garcinia family and is widely used in Assamese cuisine for its distinctive tangy flavour. Through years of research, Sarma has helped reveal its ecological, medicinal and economic significance, bringing global attention to a traditional resource of Assam and the Northeast.
A former Chief Conservator of Forests and Field Director of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, Sarma has conducted extensive studies on Garcinia species found across the region. His work has combined field surveys, botanical classification, ethnobotanical documentation and chemical analysis to deepen scientific understanding of these indigenous plants.
One of his landmark studies, published in 2019, examined six Garcinia species native to Northeast India, including Garcinia assamica, Garcinia lanceifolia, Garcinia morella and Garcinia pedunculata. The research identified 64 volatile compounds within these species, many of which are known for their antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and potential anti-cancer properties.
The findings have strengthened scientific interest in thekera, highlighting its potential applications in health, nutrition and future pharmaceutical research. They also underscore the importance of preserving the rich biodiversity of Assam and the Northeast, where many valuable plant species remain underexplored.
Currently serving as Chairman of Assam’s State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC), Sarma continues to contribute to environmental conservation and botanical research, while promoting greater awareness of the region’s natural wealth.
His work demonstrates how traditional knowledge and modern science can complement each other to unlock new opportunities for research, conservation and sustainable development.
As scientists continue to explore the secrets of thekera, a humble fruit from Assam is emerging as a symbol of the Northeast’s rich biodiversity and untapped scientific potential.
