UNSMIL expresses concern over increasing tensions and armed mobilization in the capital
TRIPOLI - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expresses grave concerns about reports of mobilization of forces in Tripoli, including the threats to use force to resolve the crisis surrounding the Central Bank of Libya. UNSMIL urgently calls for immediate de-escalation, restraint, and emphasizes that dialogue is the only solution to all issues.

UNSMIL is actively engaging relevant stakeholders to reach peaceful agreement to resolve the crisis over the Central Bank.

The Mission reiterates that the display of military power and armed confrontations in densely populated neighborhood is unacceptable and threatens the lives and security of civilians. These movements are not a viable solution to the current crisis or to the prolonged political deadlock, but rather exacerbate the crisis and further the possibility to reaching a political solution.

UNSMIL is following up with concern the recent unilateral acts by Libyan political actors and institutions, in the East, West and South. In the current climate, these unilateral acts serve to increase tension, undermine trust and further entrench institutional divisions and discord amongst Libyans. Now more than ever, consensus, dialogue and unity are needed. UNSMIL reminds all political leaders and institutions of their commitments and obligations under the Libyan Political Agreement and its amendments, in line with all relevant Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 2702 (2023).

A thriving civic space, where Libyans can engage in open and safe debate and dialogue exercising their right to freedom of expression is essential.
UNSMIL calls on all Libyan authorities to protect journalists and media workers.
