The Cat Avatar is the symbol of resistence in China
How did a cat avatar become a symbol associated with Chinese censorship? How did an art teacher become one of China’s most influential dissenting voices?
Before being “forced into fame,” Li was simply a Chinese art student studying in Italy. After graduation, he became an art teacher, spending his days drawing, teaching, and living with his two cats. He initially used Weibo to share his artwork and personal life, with no intention of entering politics.
When COVID-19 lockdowns began in 2020, Li started sharing stories from people inside China. Followers sent him accounts of hunger, suffering, and harsh restrictions, asking him to make their experiences public. His account quickly became a platform for voices that struggled to be heard.
Chinese censors repeatedly blocked his accounts. Li kept creating new ones until, after dozens of bans, he decided to move to Twitter.
On X, outside China’s censorship system, his audience grew rapidly. He documented stories surrounding the Shanghai lockdown, Foxconn protests, the Urumqi fire, and other events that received limited coverage inside China.
Meanwhile, his two cats became a recognizable part of his online identity. What started as a simple personal detail eventually became a symbol closely associated with Li and the community surrounding his work

@s_dabrattt @Sunshine899015@PressSec I’m sure the “white people” that have racist bios at least aren’t hypocrites about it. Just pointing out how someone with a racist bio was getting butt hurt about people being racist. Seems pretty hypocritical to me.
@Sunshine899015@PressSec Look at you the one with the racist bio calling people racist. Not all republicans are white btw. So much hate in your heart for others that’s pretty sad. Why don’t you just leave the country? Or are you too stupid and broke to even begin how to do that?
@lisztsz@PhDPersuasion@AmiriKing Therefore it is inferred you and everyone else are claiming he is racist towards black people. So your smart ass “fun fact” reply was unwarranted.
@lisztsz@PhDPersuasion@AmiriKing You are correct, congratulations. Considering how you said “he’s racist” and did not say towards a specific race, and in the clip he is sitting with black people, and people are talking about him writing his own script/lines to include the N word.
