@bryanth2o @SpencerJCox @TaylorWAnderson West Valley City municipal code requires in new homes a 3-car garage, and minimum above-ground space of 2000sf for ramblers (not including basement or garage) or 3000sf for multi-level homes (not including basement or garage). Many cities have their fair share of the blame.

@inkedtater What's crazy is that it doesn't at all reflect the existing housing stock. My bet is that someone had the idea to ensure that all new housing was "high-end" (read: McMansion) housing on what land remains to build on to drive up property values.
