I rode in a newer Tesla Model Y (Juniper) last night. Since I’ve been in an R2 it feels fair to compare them. I’m excluding performance impressions since it was a LR Y vs Perf R2.
R2 Wins:
Interior Material Quality
Design cohesion
Ride quality (softness)
Cabin noise
Leg room/cabin spaciousness
Drive Stalk
MY Wins:
Efficiency
Software polish
FSD(man, it is so good now)
It was fairly shocking how good FSD was, I’ve been watching plenty of YouTube videos showing exactly that but it is a different world when you ride in it. Strongly considering upgrading my wife’s 2023 Y to a HW4 car so she can have this experience.
As for my R2, it is still perfect for me. If Rivian can ever get close to an FSD experience then there won’t be much stopping them from selling a ton of vehicles. It’s my opinion that they make the better overall car as of now, just need the software and self driving to catch up.
In this video I highlight some of the R2’s software roadmap and add in some of my personal wishes for features. Let me know what features you want to see too!

The Rivian R2 honeymoon phase is officially over.
Things I love.
Things I don’t.
And a few issues I definitely wasn’t expecting.

@bartdecrem My assumption is the geofence would just be an area where the model has been adequately trained with ground truth vehicles. So any point to point destination inside the fence would be valid, where trying to venture outside the fence could result in an error or not be allowed.
@bartdecrem FSD launched so long ago and in such a different state than anything that exists now I don’t even know. Current FSD doesn’t need markers or stripes to function though.
@bartdecrem@YouTube Congrats on the new R2! Yeah, I’m very excited to see the progression. UHF is very useful right now on highways and even non highway well marked roads. I think when it can stop at stop signs and red lights that will be a huge step toward being more useful in the city.
In this video, I demo the three autonomy “spice” levels and try to show the different driving characteristics of each. Enjoy!
