The DGA 2025–2030 finally moves away from carb heavy dietary advice toward real food, protein, healthy fats, and fewer refined sugars.
When we published Kitabu cha Sukari, the evidence was already clear and clinical outcomes confirmed it. Science led first.
Policy is catching up.

We were recently awarded £4M by one of the most prestigious funders in the UK, Medical Research Council, to establish a UK wide Hub for Metabolic Psychiatry at @EdinburghUni led by @ProfDanielSmith!

MRC have funded many of the greatest scientific breakthroughs in history including:
🧬 Discovery of Structure of DNA by Watson and Crick.
💊Development of penicillin. Sir Alexander Fleming.

It was @janellison’s early and prescient support of my father Harry, Danny and I’s pilot study which has made this possible. @BaszuckiGroup have also generously co-funded the hub to amplify the impact we can make.
What I love most about working with this amazing team, is that I know that written in the DNA of all our work, there is a genuine commitment to achieving the very best we can for patients above all else.
Many thanks, @DK_Katambo, for sending over this book
It is simple and easy to understand the low-carb concept and low-carb foods.
Thanks to Harsh Mota for receiving the same from you in Kenya during the Metabolic Health and delivering it to me in India.

The book is an excellent guide for diabetes reversal and weightloss which will benefit the reader with powerful insights,
This #WorldDiabetesDay I wish to visibilize this book “Kitabu Cha Sukari” by Dr Daniel Katambo (@DK_Katambo), a consultant physician with expertise in lifestyle & nutrition focused prevention of NCDs. I came across this book recently (via someone). I like it - Mainly for general guidance on foods. ❤️
It’s a photographic guide to weight loss, pre-diabetes & diabetes management. It provides information on the impact on blood sugar of the measured quantities of local food in terms of teaspoons of sugar. It featured on #FridayNight with @lillian_muli on @citizentvkenya.
What strikes me most from the book is eg the amount of sugar (or rather impact on blood sugar) in/of various fruits. For example bananas - An impact on blood sugar of 9 teaspoons of sugar from one banana (189g)! Those in the habit of replacing normal meals with fruit salads, beware - A normal plate of fruit salad (~450g) could have an impact of 12 teaspoons of sugar on your blood sugar. As good as fruits may be, one needs to beware of sugar content/impact on blood sugar. And that increasingly popular tamarind juice 🤔, a glass (250ml) could have an impact of 15 teaspoons of sugar.
The book indicates berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), tree tomatoes, passion fruits, and vegetables (eg green leafy veges) have less sugar (or rather impact on blood sugar). Chose your foods & fruits & portions wisely.
Just providing a snapshot from the book this #WorldDiabetesDay2023, based on my understanding from where I sit. Get the book for more information/details - and to hear from the horse’s mouth.
Disclaimer: I am not marketing this book. I am only visibilizing it (making it visible) as I think it has great guidance. I don’t know Dr Katambo personally. I only came across his book & liked it.
