@cebumd I really enjoyed today’s session, doc. I realized that social media can be a very powerful tool to bring people together & start a discussion and at the same time bring awareness to relevant social issues such as HIV. #cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@cebumd There was one time when Tourette Syndrome was trending on Tiktok. I think the account owner successfully brought awareness regarding her illness. Because now people are more aware that such condition exist. And the more they become aware, the more they care. #cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@cebumd Not really, doc. What I mean to say is that if we discuss important social issues together once in a while, we deviate from our normal classroom setting. We get to interact more with the discussion. ☺️ #cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@cebumd Kids, adults, and grandparents now have social media accounts, the best way to bring awareness to social issues is maximizing social media platforms such as Tiktoks, instagram & facebook reels, etc. #cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@cebumd Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity, doc. This is definitely better than a class discussion. The more we are engaged, the more we realize the weight of the issue. And the best part is knowing that we can help in shedding light to such issues. #cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@cebumd I believe mostly because of the key points discussed by everyone this morning, doc. (1) Because they are not aware that there are other modalities of HIV transmission aside from sexual intercourse.
@cebumd 2. Be mutually faithful: Have ONE sexual partner.
3. Correct and consistent use of condom
4. Do not inject drugs. Do not drink alcohol.
5. Education and early detection (testing).

@cebumd As a medical student, the best way to help with HIV problem is to advocate on the five important ways to prevent HIV transmission, and that is:
1.) Abstinence. Do not have sex. In the case of adolescents, delaying sexual debut (age of first sexual encounter) will help.
@MarcJebrick Sad but true. 😔
I think this is where we as medical students can contribute even in our simple ways to at least eradicate the HIV stigma because this is what hinders them from getting tested. 😔 #cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@cebumd (2) Many people with HIV do not receive ongoing treatment. Most of them are afraid of seeking help from health centers because they are ashamed. These people are also commonly discriminated by the society.
@cebumd According to the CDC, the following are the challenges of controlling HIV.
(1) Too few people with HIV are aware of their infection. Fear and misperceptions can still keep people from finding out their HIV status. #cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@cebumd Many people, even those who engage in high-risk behavior, do not get tested because they do not believe they are at risk for HIV infection. #cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@JabaoJean @cebumd @eunice_talisic Totally agree. These are the things that people should be made aware of. Because the stigma is still there. And I guess this is what’s hindering people from seeking help. #cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@cebumd Aside from the numbers presented in the HIV stats, back in my hometown, I know of someone who recently died of HIV also, doc. 😔
#cnuvsmmcmicrobio
@cebumd Yes, doc. Even though the number of HIV cases worldwide is decreasing, in the Philippines, Central Visayas has the 4th highest number of HIV cases as of August 2022. This to me still sounds alarming.
