Here, I explain why India’s E20 policy hurts vehicle owners, water resource, and the environment; and helps the politician-middleman, the sugar, and the liquor lobby:
She was an employee at a Bengaluru daycare. She saw babies being tortured, loaded on to washing machines, stuffed down toilet bowls. She complained. She was sacked. She became a whistleblower and exposed the horrific crimes. She should have been rewarded.
She has been arrested.

THE E20 DEBATE: FACTS VS HYPOCRISY.
HERE'S AN UNDENIABLE FACT:
The E20 programme did not begin under the Modi government. Ethanol blending was approved years earlier, during the UPA. The difference is in execution. Blending remained stuck at roughly 1–1.5% for years before accelerating significantly under the NDA.
So, let's first get the politics out of the way.
If ethanol blending was acceptable in principle then, why is it suddenly portrayed as anti-people now?
Now, let's look at the arguments being presented by critics:
CRITICS ARGUMENT 1: E20 FUEL IS BEING PUSHED BY NDA TO KEEP SUGAR CANE FARMERS HAPPY.
There's no doubt Ethanol is creating an additional income stream for sugarcane farmers.
But governments have always handed out subsidies or incentives to farmers.
+ MSP exists for 23 crops. Sugar cane farmers get SAP or State Advised Price.
+ Fertiliser subsidies.
+ Cheap or free electricity.
+ Irrigation subsidies.
+ Procurement policies.
If these benefits to farmers are accepted as legitimate public policy, why is E20 policy being targeted in isolation for market distortion?
CRITICS ARGUMENT 2: ETHANOL PRODUCTION IS WATER CONSUMING.
Yes, sugarcane consumes a great deal of water.
But so do
+ Paddy cultivators. Just look at the tumbling water tables in Punjab, Haryana.
+ AI and data centers.
+ Semiconductor manufacturing.
+ Steel and cement production.
The question is not whether something uses water, but whether the benefits justify the costs. Again why are critics holding E20 alone to a test that they don't set for others?
CRITICS ARGUMENT 3: THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT MAKE E20 MANDATORY. LEAVE IT TO CHOICE.
We're in a democracy and choice matters. But governments routinely make decisions that we, the people have no choice but to accept.
+ Taxation rates
+ Emission norms.
+ Fuel quality standards.
+ Safety regulations.
+ Identity Proof.
These are often choices imposed to achieve broader national goals. Shouldn't E20 should be judged in the same way?
Here's how E20 usage serves NATIONAL INTEREST:
+ India imports 85–90% of its crude oil. E20 seeks to address that by replacing up to 20% of petrol volume with domestically produced ethanol, helping diversify the fuel mix and reducing import costs.
+ With E20 NDA estimates saving Rs 1 lakh crore in foreign-exchange.
CRITICS ARGUMENT 4: COST OF CAR ENGINE WEAR AND TEAR, MILEAGE INEFFICIENCY OUTWEIGHS BENEFITS.
It is true that Ethanol has about 34% less energy per litre than petrol. But because E20 contains only 20% ethanol, the overall energy content of the fuel falls by roughly 4%–7%. So at 5% a car that gives 20 km/L on pure petrol will give 19km/L. But usage also improves air quality. Which increases longevity in humans and lowers healthcare costs over time. That is s fair trade-off.
CONCLUSION:
Every policy is a trade off. E20 isn't perfect. But if agricultural subsidies, procurement, irrigation policy and fuel regulations are accepted as legitimate public policy, then judge ethanol using the same yardstick.

अब जब रिफाइनरी बनकर तैयार है, तो श्रेय लेने चले आए हैं। यदि सब कुछ आपके कार्यकाल में ही हो गया था, तो फिर परियोजना दो साल तक रुकी किसने रखी?
श्रेय और जवाबदेही एक ही सिक्के के दो पहलू हैं। आज श्रेय चाहते हैं, तो कल हुई देरी और बढ़ी हुई लागत का जवाब भी देना होगा।

APROPOS responses/questions/criticism/received on my earlier video blog on E20 PETROL. Each response has been ordered into FAQ form. Each answer has been researched from newspapers, international news agencies, auto industry bodies and GoI websites. The source of the information has been clearly identified.
1. WHY IS INDIA IMPORTING ETHANOL FROM THE U.S.?
Answer: India imports ethanol mainly for industrial, pharmaceutical and chemical uses. This allows domestically produced ethanol largely from sugarcane and grains to be diverted towards the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme. The government maintains that fuel ethanol will increasingly come from domestic production.

2. WHAT PART OF A CAR CAN E20 DAMAGE?
Answer: The concern is not the engine itself but certain fuel-system components, especially in older vehicles:
+ Rubber hoses and seals
+Plastic fuel lines and connectors
+ Fuel pump and injectors
+ Metal fuel tanks/lines (corrosion risk)
BUT all these components can wear out even in vehicles that never use ethanol. Fuel systems degrade over time due to age, heat, vibration, contaminants and normal use.

3. DOES E20 DAMAGE THE ENGINE BLOCK?
Answer: No evidence suggests E20 damages the engine block. Concerns relate to fuel-system materials and compatibility. But NOT the cast iron or aluminium engine block itself.

4. IS THERE CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE IN INDIA THAT E20 CAUSES ENGINE DAMAGE?
Answer: No. There is no large-scale peer-reviewed evidence establishing that E20 causes widespread engine damage. Nor is there long-term evidence proving zero impact across every older vehicle.
+ The scientific evidence remains inconclusive.
+ ARAI recently said it has found no evidence of widespread vehicle damage attributable to E20

5. WHAT IS INDIA'S AUTO INDUSTRY SAYING ABOUT E20?
Answer: India's major manufacturers reject claims of widespread engine damage.
+ Maruti Suzuki says it serviced over 15 million older vehicles without finding ethanol-related failures.
+ Hero MotoCorp, Toyota Kirloskar and others also say they have found no evidence of systemic engine damage.
+ ARAI recently said it has found no evidence of widespread vehicle damage attributable to E20.
+ They acknowledge a 3–3.5% reduction in mileage, but not engine failure.

6. HAVE CARS IN BRAZIL EXPERIENCED ENGINE DAMAGE DESPITE USING HYGROSCOPIC ETHANOL?
Answer: No.
+ Brazil has used high-ethanol fuels for decades without engine damage.
+ Over a period of time vehicles are specifically engineered for ethanol and most new cars are flex-fuel.
+ BUT EVEN IN the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Brazil rapidly expanded ethanol use, some older vehicles ONLY experienced deterioration of rubber seals, hoses and certain metals because they had not been designed for high ethanol content. But there were NO reports of damage to the engine block.
