Athlete, “I’m tired all the time. How can I get more energy.”
Me, “You can put your phone away by at least 930 pm and get to sleep by 10 pm so when your alarm goes off at 6 am for training you’re rested.”
Athlete, “I can’t I have school work.”
Me, “Show me your screen time from today? Your average time from the last few days? You’re averaging 5+ hours. Why can’t you replace screen time with school work so you can get the sleep you need to gain the energy you don’t have to get stronger like you said you wanted when we set goals?”
Athlete, “Well played Miss Wendi.”
This applies to adults too. You have time for many things you just don’t make time because you’re too busy getting distracted with your phone. You know I’m right 💪
You won’t win by complaining. You win by competing. The moment you stop complaining and start competing is the moment you stop losing and start winning. Winners compete. Losers complain.
If you want to get stronger and gain muscle yet you won't go to bed early, eat breakfast, drink 100 oz of water, eat protein at meals and grab something before and after your lifts you are indeed your own worst enemy.
Seriously, if you want to gain muscle you're going to have to eat. There is not shortcut or N64 cheat code. You have to do the work and it takes time and consistency.
You either want it or you don't. But don't make excuses at the end of the season when you're injured, run down and struggling to prep for winter sports because you did not care for your body this fall.
Bill Belichick said, "You earn your teammate's trust through your performance and your consistency every day."
"You have to show your team that you're committed. That's what a good teammate does."
Trust is earned, not given.
It means show up and be dependable.

Geno Auriemma said, "If you just want to be average then you do average work."
"If you want to get A's in basketball then you have to do stuff that other people aren't willing to do."
The difference between average and success is one thing:
DRIVE
If you want to be an elite athlete you must fuel⛽️ and recover like one.
You can’t eat chicken nuggets, pop tarts, and sugary drinks on the regular and expect to be a healthy & strong.
Garbage food in = garbage energy out.
🤳 TikTok isn’t more important than sleep.
Show Up.
This is often the most important step to success.
- Show up to the weight room.
- Show up in the classroom.
- Show up to your workout.
- Show up at practice.
- Show up to the gym.
With Relentless Consistency.
Every Day.
Heard a great quote last year at a football camp.
The question was:
“What is your mindset leading up to a big event?”
His response:
“I surrender the outcome. I’ve put in the work, I’ve prepared my mind and body, now it’s time to go do my best. Let the results be what they are.”
Stop worrying about the result when you’ve done everything in your power to perform at your best. Focus on the work that needs to be done. Let the rest take care of itself.
Are we who we want to be? We are all a product of our habits.
Do our habits help us, or hurt us?
Practice reflecting on your choices & be critical of your decisions. Once you evaluate - be honest. What can I do better? What can I sacrifice to help get me where I want to be?
You don’t just accidentally show up in the championship game.
Athletes, if you want to be a champion you’re going to need to earn it! 🏆

The 4 obstacles that hold back athletes the most: Fear, inability to handle adversity, lack of routines and lack of self-discipline.
It all comes down to intentionally chipping away at what’s in the way so that you can get to all of the potential that is sitting inside of you.
How do you do that? Determine the #1 thing you can START doing and the #1 thing you can STOP doing that will have the biggest impact. Then get to work. ⚒️
Bill Belichick said, "Talent sets your floor, but character sets your ceiling."
Your character is what you do.
It's not about perfection, it's about your actions.
• It means integrity.
• It means responsibility.
• It means self-discipline.
Good character is choosing what is right over what is easy.
It means accepting that you aren't defined by your victories or defeats, but by your attitude and character in the face of adversity.
You demonstrate it through your actions, decisions, and how you treat people.

Really great turn out for Mark Hilinski’s Tyler Talk. Our student athletes and parents had the opportunity to hear a very important message about mental health.

1. Lead by example
When we teach kids to control what they can control, we need to set that example.
One of the easiest ways to do that as a coach, stop arguing with referees. They made a call, now you have control of the next action. Be the example.
The kids are watching.
Words don’t tell the truth. Actions do.
It’s easy to say you believe something you don’t have to immediately back with action.
Actions speak the truth words hide.
