We do politics not for our own interests, but for the welfare of the people, claims ATM Azharul Islam MP
Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Member of Parliament for Rangpur-2 (Badarganj–Taraganj) ATM Azharul Islam said:
“We do not engage in politics for our own interests; we do politics for the welfare of the people. Calling on party leaders and activists to carry out their responsibilities with honesty and dedication, he further said, if we can prove this through our work and conduct, then, God willing, the people themselves will bear witness.”
He further said that over the past 17 years, various propaganda campaigns had been carried out against the party. He alleged that, eleven of the party's top leaders were killed, while many others were deprived of medical treatment and pushed toward death. He said the party had faced oppression, persecution, injustice, and numerous false accusations. However, he added, people ultimately did not believe those campaigns and instead elected the party's representatives to Parliament.
ATM Azharul Islam made these remarks on Saturday, July 4, while addressing a meeting of party officials from the Soyar and Alampur unions in Taraganj Upazila, Rangpur, as the chief guest.
ATM Azharul Islam said: “Our slogan is: ‘We want Allah's law; we want the rule of honest people.’ To establish Allah's law, the Constitution will need to be amended, and for that, a two-thirds majority in the National Parliament is required.”
He continued: “At present, opportunity has come before us. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has won 68 parliamentary seats. Even though the election was conducted fairly, the results were manipulated; otherwise, we would have secured even more seats. If our Members of Parliament carry out their responsibilities in their respective constituencies with honesty, sincerity, and justice—without engaging in corruption, nepotism, or compromising with wrongdoing—then people themselves will say that Jamaat is different from other political parties. They do not engage in corruption; they serve the people.”
He also said that Allah Almighty would transform people's hearts, and that this change would not remain confined to one area but would gradually spread across the country with a positive impact.
Addressing party leaders and activists, he said: “If we can fulfill our responsibilities properly, then if anyone attempts to carry out any conspiracy in the future, we will be able to confront it with the support of the people. And if an election is held five years from now, then, by the will of Allah, no one will be able to block Jamaat's path to power, inshal Allah. But before that, we must prove that we stand with the people and are committed to serving them.”
He added: “If we continue working for the cause of Islam and remain steadfast on the path of honesty and justice, then Allah Almighty will make our path easier, insha Allah.
ATM Azharul Islam also pledged that, for as long as Allah grants him life, he would continue serving the people of Bangladesh, especially the residents of Badarganj and Taraganj.
Among others, SM Alamgir Hossain, Ameer of Taraganj Upazila Jamaat; Professor Shah Muhammad Nur Hossain, a member of the Rangpur city Shura; Md. Yakub Ali, Secretary of Taraganj Upazila Jamaat; and other local party leaders were present in the meeting.
