🦖 Day 2 of Dinosaur Appreciation Month: Spinosaurus
Period: Late Cretaceous (99–93 million years ago)
Location: Northern Africa, including present-day Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Niger.
About:
• Spinosaurus is believed to have been the longest known predatory dinosaur, reaching lengths of up to 50 feet (15 meters).
• Its crocodile-like snout was filled with conical teeth designed for gripping slippery prey.
• Unlike most large predatory dinosaurs, Spinosaurus spent much of its time in and around rivers hunting fish.
• Recent discoveries suggest it had dense bones and a paddle-like tail that helped it move through water.
• Scientists completely changed their understanding of Spinosaurus decades after its discovery, transforming it from a typical land predator into what may have been the first known semi-aquatic dinosaur.
