Husband Father Chemistry Ph. D. Collagen is cool! LC8 is cool! Captivated by structural biology. Casual admirer of Mathematics. Fascinated by the cosmos.
Really excited to see this work coming to fruition. This has been years in the making, but the wait has been worth it with what we were able to learn with biophysical characterization, AlphaFold binding predictions, and negative stain electron microscopy!
This collaborative work was really interesting and so fun to study! It’s got everything: strong cooperative binding, elusive binding sites, emergent structure, and resolved paradox! I’m psyched for when this gets through peer-review
New collaborative preprint!
A striking result: a disordered linker in KANK1 binds as many as 15 LC8 dimers, forming a protein rod that bridges cell membranes and microtubules!

My recent article on using AlphaFold to predict LC8 binding in Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences just reached 500 downloads. Here’s a link if you would like to read it: https://t.co/oUld8AQz1J
If you take a gander and want to talk or present it in a journal club I’d love to chat
New paper!
We used AlphaFold to predict LC8 binding—hub protein that binds at disorder—and peeked into the black box.
AF’s internal scores can classify binders and nonbinders, and even hint at binding affinity!

Excited to speak at OSU’s AI Week tomorrow!
Flash talk: “How to know what’s believable” — using AlphaFold to predict protein structure/interactions.
Poster: LC8 binding sites & lessons from fold-upon-binding.
Come by if you’re around!

@zekrec The alt text should be updated to reflect that none of the answers provided are correct. The point stands though, we try so hard to correct exactly this, but it keeps being reinforced 😒
The Barbar lab is looking to hire a new postdoc!
If you’re interested in intrinsic disorder, protein binding, biophysical techniques, or Covid-19 research, you may be a good fit
Be prepared to learn and do bacterial expression and purification, routine biophysics, and lots of NMR
@Sphendonetos @hapyresearchers Why do you say those in particular would be hard for combinations? I can only assume it’s because you think that all creationists must believe the world is only 6000 yo, however, there is nothing in the Bible that says that. As a matter of fact, I would say it refutes it.
In about 10 minutes, there’s going to a really cool announcement about the culmination of 15 years worth of research (some of which was done at Oregon State University) on gravitational waves!

Congratulations to Dr. Douglas Walker and all involved in this new work where we highlight the importance of both long and short linkers!

A Synopsis of chemistry in 2022 from the American Chemical Society. Some of these may not mean a lot to some people outside of chemistry, but are really intriguing, others are really promising for all of us!
