This collaborative work was really interesting and so fun to study! It’s got everything: strong cooperative binding, elusive binding sites, emergent structure, and resolved paradox! I’m psyched for when this gets through peer-review
Really excited to see this work coming to fruition. This has been years in the making, but the wait has been worth it with what we were able to learn with biophysical characterization, AlphaFold binding predictions, and negative stain electron microscopy!
New collaborative preprint!
A striking result: a disordered linker in KANK1 binds as many as 15 LC8 dimers, forming a protein rod that bridges cell membranes and microtubules!

👏 Huge congrats to @DRW3FoldCords on the publication of this exciting new work!
Using #AlphaFold to predict LC8 binding—and even estimate affinity—a major step toward functional interpretation of AI structure prediction.
Check it out!

New paper!
We used AlphaFold to predict LC8 binding—hub protein that binds at disorder—and peeked into the black box.
AF’s internal scores can classify binders and nonbinders, and even hint at binding affinity!

Catch our own @DRW3FoldCords presenting at OSU’s AI Week tomorrow!
He’ll be giving a flash talk on using AlphaFold for protein structure predictions, followed by a poster on predicting LC8 sites.
Excited to see this great work in action!

Very happy to have this research published in JBC! This publication represents a tremendous amount of work from Graduate student Hannah Stuwe and we’re very proud of her efforts and success!
New in JBC press: "Scientists' data highlight the effect of phosphorylation both at local sites and at a distant self-associating hydrophobic helix in regulating liquid-liquid phase separation of the entire protein."

We are excited to offer this special symposium on Women Leaders in STEM, featuring some amazing speakers. All genders and career levels are welcome! See you on Dec. 13th at noon in the Linus Pauling Science Center 125!
Our work significantly features #NMR characterization of the nucleocapsid protein and studies behavior with both double stranded and single stranded RNA.
We hope this helps develop therapeutics that disrupt packaging

If you’ve not yet read it, our recent work suggests that #SARS-CoV-2 #nucleocapsid protein binds viral #RNA at a primary sites, but that secondary weakly interacting sites are what facilitates RNA compaction to fit its large #genome inside its envelope.
I am not on here really any more but I wanted to tweet this preprint from my PhD work that we put up over the weekend. It’s about the nucleocapsid protein of SARS-CoV-2 and (some of) the many ways it can bind to RNA https://t.co/XbuSoZAUNp
@jarildy I think it’s more valuable than many seem to credit to discuss when projects don’t go the way we hope. It’s good for the presenter to get ideas about how to progress, it’s also good to have the improved transparency
We’re so pleased and excited to welcome our newest graduate student Mukhtar Idris to the lab!! We’re looking forward to the amazing science you’ll do while you’re here! Welcome to the group!
Our work successfully applying Bayesian inference to ITC data of multitalented binding has been published in @PLOSCompBiol !! Congratulations to our recent grad student and post doc @AidanEstelle as well as co-authors @AugustGeorge and Dan Zuckerman!
Our Graduate student Hannah Stuwe got back from ENC this week! We’re excited to say she had a really good time! Bonus points: People really liked her poster, Love to hear it!!
Happy Dam Proud Day! Our goal today is to raise funds for two $2,000 research fellowships, two $500 need-based scholarships, and to take a group of undergraduate students to the National Diversity in STEM conference in Portland Oct. 26-28, 2023. We appreciate your support!
@ElisarBarbarLab shows that the function of a multivalent protein is impacted by both long AND short length (but not mid-length) linkers which separate multiple recognition motifs.
Congratulations to Dr. Douglas Walker and all involved in this new work where we highlight the importance of both long and short linkers!
