@MrTaylorMaths2 Yes, good point. Just like how we dismiss the mean if there are extreme outliers which skew the data, so too this example would likely dismiss the mode as a suitable average
@StudyMaths@taylorda01 Excellent as always.
Consolation exercise, though? "I'm sorry you're not very good at factors, multiples and primes. Here's some questions on it" 😅
📣Another #MathsConf38 workshop announcement!
🎼(Some of) the maths behind music harmony
This one will be run by @DRoseMaths
🎶 What does music have to do with maths? Quite a lot, actually.
From frequency ratios to harmonic patterns, this session reveals how mathematical structures underpin the sounds we find most pleasing.
🎷Whether you’re a music lover, maths enthusiast, or educator looking for creative cross-curricular links, this workshop offers a fresh perspective on both subjects.
✨Maths isn’t just logical – it can be beautiful too.
Don’t miss it!

@MrJ_Maths I don't know whether it's specific to my context, but when students say this, they are really saying "I am struggling with this" or "I am bored of this". In which case the response from me is always "Come on, let's have a look".
It's the final countdown ⌛️with the final workshops we'll be seeing tomorrow. We're all set up, ready to welcome you from 8:30am - see you very soon! #MathsConf35

@mr_man_maths @jwrightmaths @AxiomMaths@mathsmumof2@cjshore@LaSalleEd Well I've been told by some people so best not give up my slot so as to not let anyone down. Plus so excited to be able to deliver to so many of my peers. Your session sounds so intriguing though!
When you attend a maths conference but get to see speakers named Ben Sparks (@SparksMaths) and Tom Rainbow (@CoreMathsTom). Going to convince my friends it was actually an obscure Rock festival 👍
#MathsConf35 has lots of exciting workshops, such as this one:

Was it worth covering then? Well I've empowered them to be able to check their payslips and utility bills, ensure they're not ripped off. I've also empowered them to approximate the angle needed when leaning a ladder against a wall. Possibly avoiding harm. Was it worth covering?
This year I have taught calculating a utility bill. We worked out tax and NI deductions for a job in their vocational area. Good engagement so worth while. Will they ever calculate their utility cost to the unit or their net pay in their lives? Probably not. It's done for them.
I never know why it’s always maths that gets the bad rap here. What about “do we need to learn Shakespeare? Wouldn’t it be more useful to learn how tax or budgeting works?” Because numbers, I suppose
So pleased to be running a workshop at #MathsConf35. First timer. Presenting a task design to support problem solving and highlighting some of the challenges of FE, of course.
