@Citizens4STL Agreed. I urge those advocating for late night activities DT should get a handle on what is going on. Certainly not vibrancy in a good sense. Once the city and STMPD have a presence and things under control, we can discuss the type of positive vibrancy found in other cities.
@Citizens4STL@MikeLKehoe@SLMPD@MitchellMcCoy@CFDstlfd I am all in favor of evening activities that enrich our DT; however, what we have late night, evidenced by past and continuing lawlessness, is absurd. Until this gets under control, with a real presence of reasonable people and responsible policing, why add gasoline to the fire.
@Citizens4STL I get that limited police resources are devoted 2 violent crime; however, do not minimize the harm caused by lawless boorish behavior. It is real & serious. City & state officials need 2 pay attention and leverage & allocate funds & resources in creative ways to enforce the law.
@stlouisbiz As Clark recognizes, revitalizing DT takes a concerted strategic approach. Yes, there is some positive & substantial isolated development, but there must be an overall strategy with a buy in from all sectors. To date, we still have a lot of chatter but not enough concerted action
@Citizens4STL Amazing how the democratic process works. When ordinary citizens and downtown grass roots groups, often better understanding what’s going on DT, advocate for DT, crickets from the Alders. But when the Cardinals whisper, the Alders jump. This reality is maddening.
@Citizens4STL BB 152 is ill conceived, even if well intentioned. I am all for a vibrant city, but having food trucks open as late as 1 am is an invitation for problems given the pattern of late night trouble, the disruption of our DT, which is largely residential & understaffed police force.
@stlpublicradio A sad story. St Louis has such a rich history with blues & jazz. The live music, both in the listening room & on the summer streets, from young & old local talent, will be missed. Our leaders should step up to more than sport stadiums. A loss to DT & the region.
@Citizens4STL Here’s another derelict vehicle, this one near Pine and 14th Street downtown, that has been there last I looked a couple of days ago. It has been left there for a long time. Many tickets with no action taken to have it towed.
@Citizens4STL Indifference, ineptitude, lack of money or inability to find able workers? I think the city cares, but hasn’t put this front & center to insist on getting this right. Lack of funds due to bus. & people fleeing & refusing to live & work to bld a tax base? Time to rethink this!
@MarkMaxwellTV While I am having a hard time understanding the rationale for all this maneuvering, it seems clear that this is all about ego and power and little to do with any substance. Seems that all this energy could be put to better use and a pragmatic solution. But what do I know.
@Citizens4STL This is what progress does not look like. As a downtowner, I see the potential of a vibrant city, given its amenities and architectural gems. But, in spite of a lot of chatter, the complacency, lack of commitment and acceptance of the status quo is shocking for this transplant.
@asraza@Citizens4STL A continuing pattern of death by a 1000 cuts. How much more will the civic & business sector tolerate as companies flee? Where is GSL? Where’s the outrage? STL is mimicking Detroit years ago as it spiraled into bankruptcy rather than choosing the path of Detroit’ renaissance.
@Citizens4STL It is truly a tale of two cities, one committed to reinventing itself and the other where there is fragmentation, lack of foresight and lack of commitment, notwithstanding the lip service. Guess which one is St Louis!
@Citizens4STL This is the best & truest post I have ever seen about DT; & there have been many. I call it the Disney Effect which city politicians & business leaders living in the County who control this city & believe they know what’s best 4 us chase year after year w/o any meaningful change.
@Citizens4STL Right on point. The mantra of the city “we’re doing the best we can” simply means that the city is not doing the best it can. There are creative ways to combat this & get ahead of the curve by targeted enforcement of nuisance laws. Being slow to act and respond does not work.
@JerryTurin@aaron_lubeck STL leaders tell us that they r committed to investing in the city, but they r not. We get bike paths thru desolate zones; carnival rides at Union Station. Businesses keep leaving & refuse 2 locate in the city. Need a concerted effort 2 commit as done in Detroit & other cities.
@Jacob__Kirn This is a tragic fail on the part of our business, political & civic leaders. STL is following in the footsteps of Detroit, when it was on the way down, not on its rebirth. The leaders talk a good game, but they fail to go all in & commit. They flee except for cosmetic changes.
@DanSTL77 Other cities have short term rental laws that work. The City Counselor should amend the law so that it is constitutional ASAP B4 another incident. Certain rentals, late night clubs & vape shops r breeding grounds 4 disaster. Time 2 get ahead of the curve B4 it’s 2 late.
