🧠 HOW IT WORKS & THE SCIENCE

An AI says:

“I'm 92% confident.”

Sounds scientific.

My question is:

92% of what?

A confidence number only means something if the system has earned the ability to interpret it.

If predictions labeled “90% confident” are right roughly 90% of the time—

that's calibration.

If they're right 62% of the time?

Then 90% is decoration.

That's why we're cautious about putting confidence scores everywhere in SparkyFi.

Because uncertainty should not become another impressive-looking number with no receipts.

There's a difference between:

confidence

and

calibrated confidence.

One describes how certain the system appears to be.

The other tells you whether that certainty has historically deserved belief.

🧠 The science: people naturally use confidence as a cue to credibility. But research by Tenney, Spellman and MacCoun found that once people have evidence about an informant's calibration—the relationship between confidence and actual accuracy—they use that information rather than confidence alone.

That's exactly the distinction we care about.

Wingman shouldn't sound certain because certainty feels reassuring.

The system should express certainty only at the level the evidence supports.

Because:

confidence is a presentation.
Calibration is a track record.

Which would you trust more:

an AI that's always confident—

or one that's learned exactly when not to be?
