If you are the founder/CEO of a startup and are looking to raise capital, please pay yourself a reasonable salary. Many first time founders mistakenly think investors want to see next to nothing being paid to the founder(s).

From an investor standpoint - This increases the likelihood of the founder needing to earn money from another job and decreases the amount of time focused on the startup. They want the founder to be solely focused on the startup to maximize the likelihood of success.

Knowing what I know today from my experience in investing banking working on countless sell side M&A transactions, I will 100% pay for a sell side QofE for my HVAC SMB when I decide to sell knowing full well that the buy side will also pay for their own QofE.

SMB owners need to keep their cash conversion cycle in check even when times are good. It’s easy to let your AR increase when there is enough cash for operations at the moment. If sales slow down and cash decreases, it can quickly put the SMB in a cash crunch.
