IMHO,...
1. The gate man probably has the 3k, but he won't send it to the mechanic because he'd either not be reimbursed or take a while to get it back.
2. I believe the mechanic has the money too but won't commit himself to the job for same reason stated above.

You see one pattern I have noticed about this Profession is that it's actually the supposed 'Big Men, Silks and the Politically connected' who have access to the clients and the biggest briefs that pay the least (I'm saying this from personal experience BTW)
It's a different thing to work with a Principal who's 'struggling' but making conscious efforts to make things better. He makes you understand that he's doing his best and things will get better. He/She gives you the oportunity to take personal briefs, He/She dashes money once in a while when unexpected alerts or big briefs come in, you can decide to be an 'Understanding employee' and stay with him/her.
But how do we explain working in a firm where you have access to the invoices sent out, you see the emails containing the bills charged, you see the caliber of clients that come to the office, you attend some of these meetings with your α»ga, and you listen to the sums being mentioned, But α»ga pays you 85k, with a strict policy of 'You cannot leave the Office until α»ga leaves, you cannot take private briefs, and other things incidental thereto.
You see the Schools Oga's children attend, and your one year salary isn't even enough to pay for a term, yet Oga expects you to put your blood on the line for him ππ€£
