I know Kojima has a cult like fanbase and his influence on the industry can't be understated but Kojima doesn't have the same sway like he used to.

He is known for going over budget in an industry that's already struggling with ballooning costs in the AAA space. Publishers are becoming more risk averse as a result of this

Don't forget as well that Death Stranding 2 barely broke even.

Also the console market is no longer a growth market and is a mature market which plays into why Sony has pivoted so hard and are reevaluating things.

I don't agree with a lot of Sony's decisions as of late but I think it's important to understand why they did this.

❌Acquired Bluepoint in 2021 and failed to let them produce a single game since the acquisition, only to shut them down in 2026

❌Acquired Haven in 2022 and hasn’t provided any meaningful updates on Fairgame$

❌Acquired Firewalk Studios in 2023 and ended up with Concord aka. the greatest disaster in gaming and shut down the studio in 2024

❌Acquired Bungie for $3.6B ($4.7B in total) in 2023, which only led to layoffs and delaying Marathon due to plagiarism and a disappointing first reveal

❌Ended support for Destiny and downscaled Bungie with tons of layoffs

❌Shutdown London Studio in 2024 am cancelled their yet to be revealed live service game

❌Shut down Neon Koi

❌Shut down Dark Outlaw as of March 2026, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier

And now they want to transfer that failure to players by:
