UK restaurant chain Beefeater is closing all of its 106 sites.

The group directly blamed crippling cost pressures stemming from Government policy.

In particular, Reeves's increases in employer NICs and business rates, both of which rendered the traditional pub-restaurant business model "unsustainable."

The cost of living crisis has worsened year after year since Covid, and Labour's tax rises have put the final nail in the coffin.

Burnham Council Tax change?

Burnham is bound by election manifesto promises not to raise Income Tax, VAT, or National Insurance, so his administration is looking at property and land wealth to generate revenue and rebalance regional inequality.

One think tank that is producing options to Burnham is the campaign group Fairer Share.

We know Burnham thinks the council tax system is broken because it relies on 1991 valuations.

Fairer Share proposes -

Instead of paying a fixed local council tax band and a one-off tax when buying a home (Stamp Duty), you would pay a flat annual fee based strictly on what your property is currently worth.

** A flat 0.48% per year for primary homeowners.

** The tax would double to 0.96% for landlords, second homes, empty properties, and foreign buyers.

** Tenants would no longer pay council tax; the tax burden shifts entirely to the property owner.

** Because the tax is linked to actual market values rather than 1991 valuation bands, the amount you pay changes dramatically based on your home's worth.

The winners would be movers because stamp duty is eliminated - Renters - The North and Midlands.

The losers would be the South East and London - Asset-Rich, Cash-Poor Owners - Landlords.

Another post similar to mine has a community note saying this is a range of options Burnham is looking at.

I don’t think there’s any doubt this Labour government will bring in something very similar to this. 

This would have a devastating impact on retirees, widows, and long-term residents who live on fixed pensions but happen to reside in modest family homes that have surged in value over the decades. 

Under this system, they could be hit with thousands of pounds in new annual fees without the cash flow to pay them.

As market values rise, households would automatically see their tax bills go up every year without the government ever having to vote to raise tax rates.

If Burnham picks anything like this model it will be very bad news.

Uxbridge: This happened today. The nonce is from Hounslow. M Mansour was in the toilet of the pub and tried to take a little boy about 6 years old away. He ran out to his dad, who told the manager. Management grabbed him and called the police. The dad was going mad but the little boy was so scared the parents took him home. He swung for the manager but was taken down and dragged out by two onlookers. He also tried to assault with a small bottle and threw a salt shaker over the little boy. As there were no witnesses to him trying to take the boy into the toilet, he was let go. Watched him get on the bus to Hounslow. Police confirmed that’s where he lives. Please share far and wide. Metropolitan Police Service did fuck all once again. Met Police the worst of the scum. Let’s find this man. He is from Hounslow.
