Yesterday was Day 3 of the ongoing ACReSAL Project-Wide Retreat for Steering and Technical Committees with the theme “Strengthening Coordination and Advancing Effective ACReSAL Implementation.

Stakeholders deliberated on effective functionality and operationalization of the Technical Committee, emphasizing the need to institutionalize project gains and resources. They agreed that the ACReSAL Project has brought a level of coordination and collaboration among implementing agencies, and its impact on communities and institutions is evident.

Notably, the World Bank has rated the project performance as satisfactory.

The session was led by Mahmud Adam Kambari, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Chairman, Federal Technical Committee (FTC), ACReSAL, and Dr. Marcus O. Ogunbiyi, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Co-Chairman, Federal Steering Committee, ACReSAL.

Key stakeholders who participated in the review meeting included Commissioners and Permanent Secretaries from State Ministries of Environment, Agriculture, and Water Resources across 19 Northern States and FCT, State Project Coordinators, representatives from Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), the ACReSAL team, and other vital stakeholders.

.@ACReSALNigeria Team Visits HRH Hama Bata, Engages Demsa Communities on Planned 6,000-Hectare Irrigation Project

In a major push to transform the agricultural landscape in Demsa, yesterday the joint World Bank and Federal Government of Nigeria mission team, under the ACReSAL project, engaged with the Demsa community in Adamawa State to discuss the planned 6,000 hectares Dwam Irrigation Project.

This move intends to transform the agricultural terrain, boost food production, and enhance the economic well-being of the community.

CHIEF THIMAWUS AFRAIMU FWA JP expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to unlock the full potential of their land. "Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, providing livelihoods for many of our families.
However, our farmers face challenges such as limited access to water, poor soil quality, and unpredictable weather patterns. This irrigation project will address these challenges, empowering our farmers to increase productivity, improve crop yields, and enhance economic stability."

The project is not just about agriculture; it's about community development, creating jobs, stimulating local economic growth, and improving the overall quality of life for the people. The success of this project depends on the active participation and support of the community, as well as developing a sustainable plan for management and maintenance, he said.

Dr. Joy Iganya Agene, Task Team Leader for the ACReSAL Project, informed the community that the mission team has been working tirelessly to develop a bankable design for the irrigation scheme.

She noted that 6,000 hectares of arable land have been identified for irrigation, with approximately 20,000 farmers that will benefit from the project. The mapping exercise captured over 6,200 households and 32,000 residents in the 28 communities.

The Community-led Irrigation Project is about empowering farmers, who constitute over 80% of the people in Demsa. This project is a solution for all farmers in the entire area.

The Demsa community received insights into the catchment management plan, which will provide valuable guidance on effective land and water management to boost yields. Through this initiative, ACReSAL aims to not only equip the community with irrigation skills but also promote sustainable environmental practices.

To foster a harmonious environment, the mission team facilitated in-depth discussions with community members on peaceful coexistence and conflict transformation within their catchments. This engagement aimed to promote sustainable development and social cohesion.

Prior to the community engagement, the mission team paid a courtesy visit to His Royal Highness, Hama Bata, the revered Paramount Ruler of the Bata Kingdom, to solicit his blessings and endorsement for the project.

Empowering Yobe State: @WBG_Nigeria and @GovNigeria Kick-Start 5-Day Implementation Mission to Boost Community Climate Resilience

A joint World Bank and Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) implementation support mission to Yobe State's Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project kicked off in Yobe State, marking a significant step towards enhancing climate resilience and boosting community livelihoods in the region.

The mission is co-led by Dr. Joy Iganya Agene, Task Team Leader of the ACReSAL project, and Abdulhamid Umar, National Project Coordinator of ACReSAL.

During the preliminary meeting, Dr. Agene emphasized the mission's objectives, which include providing technical support to Yobe State ACReSAL and reviewing Yobe State ACReSAL's results framework to document project impacts.

She praised Yobe ACReSAL as one of the top-performing states in the project, highlighting His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni CON, COMN's commitment and support to addressing climate change.

Dr. Agene also expressed gratitude to the commissioners, permanent secretaries, and the Yobe State project management unit for their dedication to transforming the state's landscape from "brown to green."

Abdulhamid Umar, National Project Coordinator, revealed that Yobe State has achieved remarkable success in implementing the Community Resolving Fund (CRF), with the highest number of recipients and impressive outcomes.

He noted that beneficiaries are repaying the funds, allowing others to benefit from the revolving loan.

“Approximately 2,800 communities across the project's implementing states will benefit from this initiative, aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and enhancing livelihoods," he said.

The mission team was warmly received by Hon. Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, Commissioner for Environment, Yobe State, and Engr. Usman Ahmed, Commissioner for Water Resources, Yobe State.

By providing this financial support, promoting climate resilience, and enhancing livelihoods, ACReSAL plays a vital role in building stronger and more resilient communities.
