A few years ago I was in Oslo for work. On my day off I went to hear a reading of Ibsen's "Terje Vigen".

It isn't well-known in England but it's become a foundational national poem in Norway.

Terje Vigen is an intense and physically formidable sailor who takes on the might of the Royal Navy...and loses.

He is captured and imprisoned by an arrogant young English captain.

By the time he is released, his wife and daughter have died.

Years later, he rescues a yacht, and discovers that the sailor is the same captain who imprisoned him.
