This has always been an intellectually unserious criticism of Geneva done by pulpy conservative pseudo-intellectuals. Plenty to criticize about Early Modern Protestant Switzerland, but Geneva was neither particularly theocratic or totalitarian in the era.

There is no contradiction in thinking the whole enterprise of public schooling was a disaster waiting to happen from the beginning (like Machen warned), and thus that it needs to go, and at the same time wanting the current public schools that you’re taxed to support to teach sound material, and to exclude worthless material (e.g. SEL). These are not mutually exclusive.
FWIW I’m referring to people who want to burn down the system because they believe it’s not worth trying to save. If you’re proactively involved in improving the system, pls weigh in as you like, even if we disagree. Sorry that wasn’t clear!
Paul said that he became all things to all people in order to “save” some (1 Cor 9:22). The way some argue about the meaning of words would suggest that the word “save” necessitates some sort of sacramental efficacy through the man, Paul.
