12,000-Year-Old Fossil Bed Found in Thoothukudi!

Following torrential rains in 2023, the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) conducted a field survey at the request of the Thoothukudi administration. The assessment has confirmed a newly discovered Holocene fossil bed dating back 8,000–12,000 years.This important find enriches India’s Quaternary fossil record and provides valuable insights into the country’s ancient wildlife, environment, and climate.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has commended ZSI for its swift and exemplary scientific response in safeguarding the nation’s natural heritage.

At the request of the Thoothukudi administration in Tamil Nadu, @ZoologicalI conducted a field survey of fossil sites exposed by torrential rains in 2023.

The assessment confirms a newly discovered Fossil Bed dating back to the Holocene period (8,000–12,000 years), which significantly enriches the Quaternary fossil record of India. This discovery is important because it helps us better understand India’s ancient wildlife, environment, and climate.

A milestone in Indian taxonomy!

In a remarkable development, Zoological Survey of India has announced the discovery of two new species of Lichen moths.

The discovery of Caulocera Hollowayi and Asura Buxa are vital contribution to the documentation of India’s moth biodiversity. Research into evolutionarily significant and lesser-known groups like Lepidoptera is essential for understanding ecosystem functioning and air pollution indicator species of Indian Himalaya. This success underscores the necessity of sustained taxonomic efforts in biodiversity hotspots like the Himalayas.
