A new piece in the Financial Times created a great visualization of the results from this study.
TL;DR: Rent control helps people whose rents get limited, but it hurts everyone else. It pushes up rents, pushes down new building, and makes cities worse.
It is horrible policy.
Deirdre McCloskey has a forthcoming book — Equality of Permission (Chicago) — that all liberals should read. I think it is no exaggeration to say that this work alongside Bill Easterly’s Violent Saviors and Barry Weingast’s forthcoming book on Adam Smith are the most important social scientific works in recent times to put liberty at the center of the analysis. Here is a great conversation from a decade ago between Don Boudreaux and McCloskey on the Bourgeoise trilogy.

@FavaMandies@marcjoffe I still don’t understand what unscheduled absenteeism is- long term leave and protected leave would seemingly be known in advance? Thus in addition, 24% of shift drivers call in sick or take a day off without warning?
@marcjoffe 3% at 50!!! https://t.co/dwi4d9bejs showed that teachers valued a dollar of pension benefits at only 20cents. I.e. strong pensions are NOT good ways to attract employees and but tremendously costly for the agency/taxpayers
@nut_history I *do* praise Bonds often..
and I don’t care what he took or how many sportswriters he pissed off, he was the most incredible hitter I’ve ever seen and it’s
not. even. close
Brightline is filing for bankruptcy. While certainly there are policy issues around permitting time and construction costs and EPA rules and the like, fundamentally, Brightline made sense as a rail project. But it's going bankrupt because demand for passenger rail just isn't there.
The reason America doesn't have European railways is because Americans do not actually want them very much.

How are prices determined? While I slept, Claude made me "History of economic thought since Aristotle." I asked it to use my favourite textbook (Blaug, Economic Theory in retrospect). The result will astonish of you. Even top economists here will learn something, I promise.
Chile required all gas stations to put their prices on the internet. The result? Margins went up 9%. Never forget that buyers are not the only people interested in what prices are! 1/
Truth from @Steve_Glazer:
“Voting against Measure RTM is not saying no to transit; it’s saying no to irresponsible leadership and the new tax burdens BART and other transit agencies want to place on those who can least afford it. “
I am proud to join former State Senator Glazer is in opposing Measure RTM.

Milton Friedman: “A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it…gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.”
Artists: but I don't want to lose my job. I love it.
Mathematicians: but I don't want to lose my job. I love it.
Economists: LONG HAVE I AWAITED THIS HOUR! DESTROY ME, EFFICIENCY, AND LET UTILIZATION-ADJUSTED TOTAL FACTOR PRODUCTIVITY RISE ON THE WIND OF MY ASHES!
I introduced @RichardHanania to @AlexEpstein, so I like to think that I deserve a small share of the credit for this fine piece.

My classroom recordings must "conform to WCAG 2.1 AA standards. content owners (i.e. faculty) are required to review the AI-generated captions and transcripts and make any corrections to meet the requirements of 99%+ accuracy." If enforced, I simply won't post them. ADA!
@CAgovernor vetoed AB1383. It’s the right decision. Our local governments can’t afford to provide more pension benefits to public safety personnel. I had hoped for a compromise solution to lower the retirement age to 55 in exchange for employees & employers sharing equally the risk of unfunded liabilities This is
the pension fix needed for all public employees.
> colleges give A's to everyone.
> firms need to scale up intensive interviews and assessments, to figure out who is good.
> students spend all their time preparing for firm interviews and assessments, and none of it on classes.
> profs: Why don't my students work anymore?
