To the Americans:

I've travelled all over the world. I've familiarized myself with many places, and met many people. And I'm a Canadian, although I’m privileged to reside once again in the States.

And here's something I've noticed, and it’s a key element of America's continuing greatness:

You bloody Americans value success, and you believe in its existence.

This is something that doesn't really happen anywhere else in the world. Even in other free democracies—the United Kingdom; Finland, Sweden, and Norway; Australia, New Zealand and Canada; Germany, France, and the Netherlands (great countries all)—a counterproductive cynicism too often reigns.

Success is equated with exploitation.
Ambition is looked upon with contempt.

This happens sometimes in the United States too—particularly among the miserable progressives, who confuse their resentment, ingratitude and unearned skepticism with wisdom.

But in your great country, by and large, striving is admired and success celebrated.

This means that more people strive and succeed in the US than anywhere else. And it's increasingly obvious. You remain stunningly more innovative and productive than any people anywhere else on the planet.

And so I say, as all should who are fortunate enough to live in the western world, let alone America:

Thank God for the United States.

Thank God for the wisdom of its founders.
Thank God for its faith in the free market and in the natural rights of man.
Happy birthday, you damn Yankees and Southerners.

Long may your admirable country dominate the world.

Long may your freedom and hope provide an example to those suffering everywhere at the hands of their malevolent states.

May your two and a half centuries of unparallelled success be just the beginning.

Your country is the light of the world, and the city on the hill.

Thank God for the USA.

Remember, shortly after retiring in 2023, Flanagan also told The Irish Times, “I do find that the plurality of voices long evident in Leinster House are not as evident now. There is a dangerous intolerance of any view that is
not being pushed by vociferous, well-financed and well-funded non-government organisations.”

He raised the alarm about the power of the NGOs stating, "I have said to colleagues that I would have more influence on Government policy if I was a middle-ranking official with an NGO than I have as a government backbencher.”

So in this most recent scandal, I am inclined to believe Flanagan over Foley.

Irish voters believed Eamon Ryan and the Green Party were responsible for many policies that they hate, e.g. carbon tax, ultra wokeness, etc. The public were under the impression that FFG were basically sensible and competent at their core, and were simply being forced to make concessions to radical environmentalists against their better judgement for the sake of holding the coalition together.

So the voters destroyed the Green Party and reduced their Dáil share from 12 seats to 1, but kept FFG around, assuming they'd get a steady hand of the old parties unencumbered by window box salads and wolves.

And yet now the Greens are gone, but the policies people hate remained.

It's almost like the Green Party weren't actually the primary culprit, and were only a convenient mudguard for the bigger parties, who are actually the primary defenders of this stuff.

A busy and skilled carpenter/tradesman from Galway made this observation to me this morning and it struck me as likely true. He said he believes regular people did not realise that the price of [fuel], at the pump was more than double what it should be due to taxes collected by the Irish government. He said even if he had heard it before, he would have dismissed it as an exaggeration. Now everyone realises what has been going on and they’re not going to agree to back down on the demand that it be cut. #FuelProtest

Government funded media in Ireland, and that's most of it, are having to sing for their supper with their coverage of the #FuelProtest. Even RTE must be quietly chocking on how they are having to cover this.
The government can end this in 15 minutes by announcing the cancellation of the carbon taxes and a reduction of VAT on fuels along the lines of what Poland has done. It's that simple. The fact they haven't yet done that tells you how captured they are by special interests.

Imagine if Trump deployed the U.S. Army against peaceful protestors in America. Just picture the media meltdown. Now the Irish army, that I served in (reserve) for the best part of twenty years is being deployed AGAINST our own people? The government should resign, what an absolute disgrace. How many of the arseholes in government served in the Army, Navy or Air Corps? How dare they deploy our troops for such purpose. #FuelProtest

There is no Irish electoral mandate for carbon tax on diesel, petrol and home heating oil. The Greens were booted OUT in the last election. The continued imposition of these carbon taxes is anti-democratic. Remove them immediately and deliver some relief to the Irish people and respect their vote.
VAT on fuel should also be cut, out of economic decency and common sense. The cost of energy must come down and the fact that the government is responsible for about half of it means they have a lot of space to act. #FuelProtest

That part of the Irish and European left that are angry and upset at the destruction of Iran’s leadership and the possible toppling of the Iranian regime should look to the Iranian diaspora (including those here in Ireland) for clues about how to react. They are jubilant, with good reason. I’m delighted for them and pray that Iran can become a truly free country.

Tanaiste Simon Harris who obsessively demonised Israel throughout the Israel/ Gaza war, cancelled the Israeli ambassadors invite to Fine Gael’s Ard Fheis (annual party conference) held in 2024 in the immediate aftermath of becoming FG leader & was praised by Irans ambassador, who was a guest at the event, for doing so, has to date said nothing about the atrocities being perpetrated by the Iranian regime against its own people.
