Many Americans may not know, there was an EU day of mourning held 3 days after the 9/11 attacks.

Ireland went one further, becoming the only European nation to declare a full public holiday to allow people pay their respects.

All schools and government buildings closed, most businesses.

Sporting events were cancelled.

All flags went to half mast.

A 3 minute silence was observed.

A special service in Dublin saw the Irish President and Taoiseach pay their respects

250 Dublin firefighters marched to the American Embassy to lay wreathes

A queue formed to sign a book of condolences at the American Embassy became so long, over 4000 stood for hours at any one time to show their respect

The outpouring of sympathy and support was overwhelming and unprecedented, a symbol of strong Irish - American links
