Today, the @GGGI_Rwanda team joined the nation in marking the 100 days of commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi (Kwibuka 32) through visits to the Nyanza Genocide Memorial and the Campaign Against Genocide Museum.
At Nyanza, the final resting place of over 105,000 victims, we paid tribute through a moment of remembrance and wreath-laying, honoring the lives lost and standing in solidarity with survivors.
During the visit, @CarolineCMRaes, GGGI Deputy Regional Director for Quality of Delivery and Rwanda Country Representative, emphasized that remembrance must inspire action. She called for continued commitment to building inclusive, resilient, and sustainable societies.
Our visit to the Campaign Against Genocide Museum further highlighted the courage and sacrifices made to stop the genocide and save lives. It stands as a powerful testament to the enduring values of #unity, #resilience, #Love and #hope.
For @GGGI_Rwanda , this commemoration is a solemn moment to reflect on our shared responsibility to build a future rooted in peace, inclusion, and sustainable development, ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.

Thank you to our followers and partners for staying engaged in the carbon markets campaign.
In previous posts, we discussed the benefits of carbon markets, including economic and financial opportunities, how technology transfer can support emission reductions and innovation, and the environmental and social co-benefits they deliver.
Today, we turn to another important aspect: The potential risks of carbon markets for host countries.
What do we mean by risks?
Risks refer to the possible negative consequences that host countries may face when participating in carbon markets, particularly under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Why is it important to identify these risks?
✅ It helps host governments and stakeholders anticipate and manage potential challenges
✅ It ensures that carbon projects do not harm communities, the environment, or national interests
✅ It supports the development of strong policies and regulations to guide implementation
Key risks to consider:
1️⃣Economic risks
👉 Price volatility can affect expected revenues
👉 High transaction costs for monitoring, reporting, and certification can reduce project profitability
👉 Benefits may not be distributed equitably among investors, project participants, and local communities
2️⃣ Environmental & Social risks
👉 Projects may overstate their environmental impact
👉 Some activities may unintentionally harm ecosystems
👉 Communities may face displacement or limited benefits
👉 Weak monitoring and verification can compromise environmental integrity
3️⃣ Governance & Policy risks
👉 Extensive transfers of mitigation outcomes without considering domestic mitigation needs may make it more difficult for a country to achieve its own Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets
👉 Inadequate oversight of authorizations and corresponding adjustments can create accounting and integrity concerns
👉 Weak regulatory frameworks may allow low-quality credits
👉 Policy uncertainty can affect investor confidence and long-term project viability
👉 Limited transparency can reduce trust in carbon markets
Understanding these risks is essential to ensuring that carbon markets deliver real, fair, and lasting impact while supporting national development priorities.
📌 Stay with us as we continue unpacking carbon markets under the Paris Agreement. In the next post, we'll explore Rwanda's Carbon Market Framework to better understand its overview and purpose.

This morning, our CEO had the pleasure of welcoming Caroline Raes and her team from the Global Green Growth Institute (@gggi_hq ) for the signing of a Memorandum of Engagement between GGGI and Rwanda Green Fund.
The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration to advance Rwanda’s green growth and climate resilience ambitions in support of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, Rwanda’s NDC 3.0, and the Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy.
Through this partnership, RGF and GGGI will work together to mobilize green investments, strengthen carbon market development and Article 6 implementation, support innovative financing solutions, provide technical advisory services on green technologies, and develop a pipeline of high-impact climate and green growth projects that contribute to Rwanda’s sustainable transformation.

Omar Artan didn’t just make the #FIFAWorldCup, he made history as the first Somali referee to get there, and as #Africa’s best. That milestone stands no matter what. So sorry to see this, Omar. You reached the summit of your profession and inspired a generation back home just by getting there, and being kept off the pitch you earned doesn’t change that. This won’t be the end of your story on the world stage. The world stands with you as one family, wishing you resilience now and many more major finals to come. Solidarity. #Somalia
