Is happiness a morally charged concept? Ceteris paribus, is the saint happier than the sinner? Diverging from the great work by @phillipsjs and @xphilosopher, @DanHaybron and I find that morality plays no role in the concept of happiness. OA in AJP: https://t.co/oLqoo1Ooeg
@Ticketmaster website said order failed so please try again. I did, then got double-charged: 2 orders for 2 sets of tickets, even though I only got one order confirmation on the web. Chatbot says no refund, so next step is to block fraudulent charge on card? Please advise.
New paper with @kneer. First, laypeople see little/no essential link between morality and happiness or well-being. The wicked can flourish in their view.
But the biggie is: commonsense uses an important concept of the good life that philosophers have largely ignored. Link below
Maybe the greatest thing that ever happened to us. Wife was mowing the lawn and "vwooop!"--up into the air the mower went, then came to a peaceful rest.
She ran over a tire swing rope hanging from the tree and the mower caught it and hoisted itself right up the tree.
Now out in NOÛS (w/ D. Haybron) : Does the term “happy” denote an internal (psychological) state, or is it sensitive to external factors (e.g. a meaningful life)? And how does it compare to “doing well”, leading a “good life” etc.? Open access here: https://t.co/nAdsFCO8TK
@johnbryanesq Maybe this style is more common than I thought, but we've had a piano almost identical to this in the family from the same period, Vose and Sons, still plays well. New soundboard and 6-7 generations have played it so far. Thanks for an amazing thread.
@NPRinskeep I had a very good experience speaking there in 2018 but wish I'd known how many of the students were Native American/Indigenous before I arrived. I don't know the proportion, except relatively high, but I imagine those students would appreciate some gesture during commencement.
@xphilosopher@kneer I suspect the pattern reflects a history of evaluative terms for well-being or good fortune shifting toward a more descriptive psychological meaning. Eg, happiness: good hap; what you might wish for newlyweds, etc. Now mainly but not wholly a psych term. Polish: I don't know!
@JanelCubbage Dr. Shawn Utsey (psychology, VCU) gave a riveting talk on racism and stress at my university, got audience sharing stories, etc. Jason Purnell at Wash U has done outstanding work on racial disparities on health in St. Louis and is an excellent speaker as well.
