Here is my poem 'I remember my childhood as a violent nursery rhyme,' published in the delicious latest issue of @madrigalpress https://t.co/aphhMRyMxo
@aimtove@okeechoBree That's not 'out of context' that's firmly in context. The episode sets up an Amazon satire and comes down on the side of Amazon. I think it does so out of a vapid lack of consideration for its themes rather than being intentionally evil, but that's still what the episode does.
@aimtove@okeechoBree The Doctor is also the last person to side with an exploitative company when they've literally helped initiate a revolution that brings down capitalism, and yet Kerblam exists. These are not real people, these are stories that writers make decisions to write.
@Dorkiana2@JayExci I never even said I dislike Unicorn and the Wasp, I think it's a perfectly decent episode, but pretending it's better than anything we've had in years purely as a way to bash the current era (when there are plenty of legitimate critiques) is just silly.
@Dorkiana2@JayExci No. My argument, which I've reiterated about a dozen times at this point, is that there are plenty of episodes better than Unicorn in this era, and that people who disagree are rating good episodes poorly out of a dislike for the era rather than actual honest engagement.
@Dorkiana2@JayExci Let's not try and pretend your takes are reflective of the majority all of a sudden. And again, I don't know how many times I have to directly quote 'ahead of anything that's been put out for years' to make the point. This is self-evidently not just a claim about 'the era feel'.
@Dorkiana2@JayExci I can't see any way in which people can genuinely think that except that they've arbitrarily decided 'This Era Bad' and thus refuse to acknowledge the good episodes as good.
@aimtove@okeechoBree If you can't see the issues with writing a story in which displaced people are baddies coming to take over during Boris Johnson's first year as PM, as the Tories are ramping up their anti-refugee politics, then there's not much point having a media criticism discussion with you.
@aimtove@okeechoBree I'm not saying that, I'm saying writing characters that are trying to survive and being hopeful against the odds isn't enough to constitute meaningful storytelling. And the refugee part is in her hologram to Yaz talking about 'displaced creatures' coming to 'take over' the Earth.
