@markbishopuk@LukeTryl Probably only sensible alternative I’ve seen
Although what would you do for those entitled to NI credits, that protect NI record when not earning.
Such as parents, carers, long term sick/disabled
Would gov pay a flat contribution into their pension during those periods?
@maxtempers I think it has made skilled essential shift work less appealing to parents
Why work as a firefighter or nurse on £35-40k and deal with difficulty of childcare on a mix of 12 hour day & night shifts
Not hugely worse off for both to for £25k jobs that both fit in school hours
@THE_LHC@CentreLeft_@DAaronovitch So if state pension (SP) reliably provides 30% of prior income, that leaves 30% to come from workplace pensions and/or savings
If SP went up only by inflation, it would require to be delivered from work pensions. Meanwhile most works pension schemes have become less generous
@THE_LHC@CentreLeft_@DAaronovitch Pensioners don’t need 100% of their pre retirement wage
As they aren’t commuting, buying work clothes/tools, raising a family and likely no longer have rent or mortgage costs
But for low -middle earners, you still need about 60-80% (£20K-£25k) once retired
