@ingelramdecoucy I'm all for them if we get regulations in place to require them to produce their own power.
Some of you may be rich, but I can't afford to pay double the price for electricity.
@Eric_P8@politicalmath High electricity prices are caused by supply and demand.
Democrats increase prices by passing stupid regulations that constrict supply.
Datacenters increase prices by sucking up ridiculous quantities of power and increasing demand.
They need to build those solutions BEFORE the data centers, not after them, and there need to be regulations in place to ensure that they self-supply in perpetuity.
Anything less means they'll mooch off the public grid and stick us with the costs. Why? Because smart companies always externalize costs whenever possible.
@HistoryBoomer I used to manage a fairly substantial tool rental center. Most people can't even run a 3/4" drain snake down the main line without kinking it.
I can't even imagine the average joe trying to operate an industrial-sized machine for clearing municipal lines.
@AlmostMedia@politicalmath That's a great idea!
How about the AI companies build the nuke plants first, and once they've built enough capacity to fill their needs, THEN they put in the datacenters?
@johnnyweakhands@Michael05807267@politicalmath Good. Let the AI billionaires build power plants first. When they've constructed enough capacity to power their datacenters, they can knock themselves out!
Until then, most Americans aren't okay with their utility bills skyrocketing to subsidize this nonsense.
@ApodacaHaracio@Michael05807267@politicalmath As long as they pay for it and construct new power plants to cover every kilowat they consume.
Do you really think data-center company lobbyists are going to push for that? Or will they push for every conceivable loophole to ensure the public pays for their costs?
@IEgerstrom@HJB_News__ Thank you for saying this!
When I say "ACAB," people always assume I'm some kind of Anarchist or Communist, when my views are more or less the polar opposite.
I just don't trust a group of people who will enforce the will of the state over the good of the nation.
