Congratulations to our first PhD CANDIDATE (!!) from the lab - Erika Bistran - who successfully passed her qualifying exam today! Keep up the awesome work!
Congratulations to Connor Barth on graduating from @CofC today! Connor was the first undergrad in our lab, and has made a huge impact on our work on Neglected Tropical Diseases. Truly an incredible student! Next stop: PhD in Chemistry, University of Virginia!
The next part in the Aleutianamine saga from the Hamann Lab! We are thrilled to have played a part in this neat @angew_chem paper! Here, PIQ alkaloids undergo a fun rearrangement, and are active on chemotherapy-resistant cells! Congrats, all!

We are super proud of our Graduate Student, Erika Bistran, who was awarded an @American_Heart Predoctoral Fellowship to continue her work on host-pathogen interactions in schistosomiasis! We can't wait to see where her training continues to take her!!
Also, highlighting our wonderful graduate student, Erika, and our Lab Manager Alison, with each of their first co-authorships from the lab! Keep up the great work!
I'd like to highlight a collaborative effort with the Hamann Lab (and plenty of others worldwide!) that is out today in JNP! I was fascinated by aleutianamine long before MUSC. Now, I'm thrilled to have worked in some small part on the aleutianamines! https://t.co/q5WfQJrSVN

Our new paper is officially out in @ACSPublications ACS Infectious Diseases! This was a fun one! Who knew a thioamide could be so interesting?!
I also want to highlight Connor, our undergrad @CofCChem who contributed - his FIRST paper! Congrats all!
The first paper with work from our lab is out today in @ScienceAdvances!! This was a collaborative effort with the Gan Lab here @MedUnivSC, and we are extremely grateful to have been able to contribute to their continuing efforts to understand PTMs!!

Alumni Spotlight: Dan Sprague, PhD (Asst. Prof. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Medical University of SC)
This Friday's spotlight highlights one of our remarkable alumni, Dr. Dan Sprague! Learn more about his experience in the program, his career and his advice for students!
Today, we welcome Connor Barth into the lab as an undergraduate researcher from the College of Charleston. Time to make some molecules!!!! We're excited to have someone new excited about synthesis in the lab!😀
We've had an eventful end of semester - the lab is growing! We're super excited to welcome Alison Bland as our Research Specialist and to add Julia Staton to the team for Rotation #2. Time to start investigating new signaling pathways -- in worms and in cancer! Welcome all! 😀
We're SUPER excited to welcome our first student, @ana_pettijohn, to the lab for the first rotation this year! Ana comes with a Total Synthesis background from Coastal Carolina, and we're going to see what trouble she can get into while developing new antiparasitics! Can't wait!
And the Chemistry Gods said "Let there be Chemistry!" And a functioning hood appeared!
We're so excited to finally have a functioning fume hood. Chemistry starts next week!!!!!
Are you a grad student working in molecular, cellular, or immunoparasitology? Do you want a talk and free registration to #TropMed24? Submit to the ACMCIP 3MT -- a great opportunity! Please pass this along to anyone you know who could be interested. Reach out with any questions!
Dan's work from the @MarchantLab is a featured article!!!! Flukicides for the win! (Thanks to Jonathan for taking one for the team and making the in-person video!)
Parasitic flatworms known, as flukes or trematodes, are responsible for some of the most debilitating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affecting billions of people worldwide. Schistosomiasis, caused by blood flukes, is a significant health risk in many tropical regions.
The need for more effective treatments and a growing resistance to currently available drugs has pushed researchers to find new solutions.
In a groundbreaking study, MCW’s Dr. Jonathan S. Marchant and his team identified a new class of compounds called benzamidoquinazolinones (BZQs) that show promise as broad-spectrum treatments for trematode infections in humans.
