The Constitutional Court has granted the temporary injunction, which had been coordinated by President Lai Ching-te with the Office of the President, the Executive Yuan, the Control Yuan, and the Legislative Yuan. The injunction is tantamount to a direct challenge to parliamentary reform and raises concerns about the future of Taiwan's democracy.
The Taiwan People's Party @TPP_Taiwan has utilized its position as a key minority to help the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) achieve its long-held ideals for parliamentary reform. Yet, the DPP has chosen to vehemently oppose legislation that enjoys broad public support.
For a long time, the Taiwanese public has harbored deep mistrust towards the judiciary. The recent Constitutional Court's process, from the acceptance of the application to the hearing procedures and the near-total suspension of the outcomes of parliamentary reform, took only 22 days. The process was fraught with controversy, including disagreement about the admissibility of the motion, the disproportionate number of lawyers on both sides, and ultimately, a ruling that runs counter to Taiwan’s democratic reform.
Prior to the announcement of the Constitutional Court’s decision, a DPP spokesperson predicted that the Constitutional Court would make a ruling before the end of the day, clearly indicating a close alignment between the Court and the DPP. This has turned the Court into a political tool of the ruling party, eroding its neutrality and independence, and further diminishing public trust in the judiciary.
The ruling party's interference in the judiciary, including the Constitutional Court, is blatant and astonishing. If President Lai Ching-te continues to oppose public opinion with his own ideological stance, the future of Taiwan's democracy is at serious risk.
The Taiwan People's Party will continue to uphold its commitment to integrity, diligence, and love for the people and the homeland. We will persist in doing what is right, forging ahead without hesitation. This, I believe, is what Taiwan truly needs.
The Legislative Yuan has rejected the Executive Yuan's request for reconsideration regarding the legislative reform bill. We call on President Lai Ching-te to immediately promulgate and implement this act.
In championing legislative reform, eight Taiwan People's Party (TPP) legislators have faced attacks head-on, diligently dispelling rumors and clarifying the benefits of the reform. They have emphasized that the reform will fully empower the Legislative Yuan's oversight, checks and balances, and investigative functions. This will curb the executive branch's dominance, effectively combat corruption, and genuinely protect public rights. Public opinion is clear, with nearly 60% supporting the reform according to multiple polls.
TPP will continue to advocate for judicial reform and government revenue and expenditure allocation reforms. We are committed to achieving the reforms that the Democratic Progressive Party has promised but failed to deliver.
