SYRIA NOW WANTS TO KEEP ITS URANIUM

On 18 August 2026, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani announced that nuclear material discovered at an undeclared Assad-era site including stocks previously identified in reporting as yellowcake and related natural uranium will remain under Syrian national custody.

The material, confirmed by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi during his visit to Damascus as several tonnes of natural uranium metal, will be subject to international safeguards and verification. Syria has asserted its sovereign right to retain the stocks for peaceful civilian purposes.

This decision reverses earlier reports of a planned IAEA-led removal of the material. The development forms part of the most significant advance to date in resolving outstanding nuclear safeguards issues inherited from the former regime.
