US President Donald Trump has admitted that he asked FIFA to review Folarin Balogun's red card suspension for the Round of 16 match against Belgium ⚽️
More on President Trump's call to Gianni Infantino.
It was communicated directly to the FIFA President that Trump felt the punishment was unjust. Other White House figures also lobbied FIFA.
US Soccer say they were "engaged" in the process and argued slow motion replays distorted the incident.
FIFA insist the decision to suspend Balogun's red card was made by an independent panel.
Yet the Royal Belgian Football Association say they are "astonished" by the decision, adding Article 27 does not allow for a suspended punishment under these circumstances.

FIFA has done this before in these situations. This isn’t some unprecedented exception.
Red card suspensions have been overturned before, and they’ll be overturned again when FIFA determines the circumstances warrant it. No matter how much some European and South American fans insist otherwise, history says they’re wrong.

The shape of the game points toward a decent corners count. Cape Verde have racked up nine corners across the tournament and average around three per game, while Argentina dominate possession and territory heavily, especially against sides who sit deep. That kind of one-sided territorial battle usually generates plenty of Argentina corners from crosses and blocked shots, even if Cape Verde’s own tally stays low
