Peter Brown's summary of one of the recently-discovered letters of Augustine: "we find Augustine, at the age of seventy-three (only three years before his death), interviewing a terrified country girl who described how her farm had been raided by slave traders. The poor child could not even speak Latin - only Punic. Her older brother translated for her. This was part of a dogged attempt by Augustine and his congregation to break a ring of slave-traders who operated (with the full protection of local bigwigs), out of the port of Hippo."
The International Banana Museum is established in Mecca, California.
The mastermind behind it is Ken Bannister, who is obsessed with bananas, wears a banana suit, and calls himself “Top Banana.”
My father traveled internationally for 20 yrs, and had a stroke at 63 yrs old. You could see the wear and tear over a long period of time. I had always believed that was one major contributing factor.
Here's a snapshot of the biological insult from international travel. It takes your body over two weeks to fully recover.
It's a big price tag.
One international trip per quarter is a reasonable balance.
Time to recover:
> sleep duration: 2 days
> grip strength: 5 days
> mood: 1 wk
> cortisol: 9 days
> sleep quality: 2 wks
> blood glucose: 2 wks
"I consider the positions of kings and rulers as that of dust motes. I observe treasures of gold and gems as so many bricks and pebbles. I look upon the finest silken robes as tattered rags.”
Younger generations will never understand what it was like to live in the boomer monoculture. They can’t understand how oppressive the monoculture messaging was: the point of life is to work your way up the ladder, make money, buy expensive things, then, just retire.
What if we kissed at The Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex(SRMSC) a cluster of military facilities near Nekoma, North Dakota, that supported the United States Army's Safeguard anti-ballistic missile program featuring a giant pyramid without a capstone
US Congressman James Traficant (D-OH) is indicted on federal corruption charges for taking campaign funds for personal use.
Traficant, who is not a lawyer, says that he will represent himself in the case.
If he is convicted, he will become the first Congressman expelled from the House of Representatives since Michael Myers in 1980.
@fxxfy@LucastaHonoria Ppl overthink this one. Go to Costco or wherever and buy fresh peeled garlic. Throw into a small blender. Done. When I worked in kitchens we did this all the time. No need to peel and dice yourself.
Within the millennial cohort, it’s really the ‘elder millennials’ who were the majority to establish a career and purchase a home prior to the ladder being pulled up. This cohort also benefited from the COVID housing market, which many of them sold for major profit to move up
Honestly only a small portion of millenials got a bite at the apple, if you had a W-2 and a down payment between 2012 and 2016 you could buy a house in a somewhat sane market. If you were even a little too young/still in college you didn’t have a chance. Zoomers didn’t have this.
One of the main lessons many govt’s took from the 20th century is that forceful coercion leads mainly to open revolt and collapse. Instead, top-down behavioral nudging, societal conforming pressures, and financial incentives do better to control populations
Prediction: We won’t have UBI. We’ll have UCI.
(universal credit income, or whatever else it might be called)
Assuming labour will cease to exist, governments will have to pay you money, for you to fulfill the consumption side of the economic equation. While everyone believes that people will get an equal paycheck similar to stimulus payments, I believe it’ll be akin to airdrops, where each person is credited based on their behavior, actions, social score, etc.
TL;DR: take the chinese social credit system and combine it with UBI.
@PaulSkallas faces you never see anymore. Top tier Rugby athletes in their 20’s and 30’s in the 1980’s, looking like their 40 or 50 yrs old. The water revolution is real
